Haven’t gotten that far in the restoration. Will likely use fatsacs. Not much room in a 90’s sport for built in ballast! |

Off subject but do you having any pictures of your balast set up ? how much weight? what is the surf like . I was planning on it for a winter project. thanks

I don't know the chemistry behind it but have heard it's something about the salt crystalizing at higher temperatures.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm actually not sure that the 143 tstat is installed. Now my temp gauge only stays at 120 or a hairline above. I have ordered an infared temp gun. I am also checking the temp sender switch.
Since posting I've found all the other threads about the GT40 t-stat. I'm learning a lot with this engine, its been a lot of fun. One thing I have seen asked but not answered anywhere (that I can find) is why do saltwater engines need a cooler temp?

PCM says 160 degree T-stat for EFI engines and 143 degree T-stat for carburetor engines. However, you can run a carby 351W with a 160 Degree T-stat. I did for several years. Performance was outstanding. I saw no reason to go to a 143 Degree as I was only in fresh water.

Fuel injected PCM engines are 160 thermostat. End of story.

There aren't 2 the 160 is what is called for by PCM for their fuel injected raw water cooled engines. But if you think your mechanic knows more about PCMs engineering- most likely with Fords engineering help as well,then by all means follow what your guy recommends. ;)

During my GT40 rebuild on my 96 Sport, we left the previous t-Stat on the engine. In running it For first time last week, it appears the T-stat is a 143 F model. I have a new 160 in the box but my mechanic suggests I leave the 143 in since I will run her hard sometimes boarding and surfing with ballast.
Thoughts? What are the pros and cons of leaving the 143 in? And why were there two different thermostat options for this engine? |
