Try unhooking the prop shaft from the transmission and see if the noise goes away

Wow where did you find the video of Pete’s twin brother? I can only imagine the table talk at Thanksgiving.

Based on that video I'm pretty sure it's my girdle spring, which is probably stuck on the turbo encapulator's logarithmic casing. Just a hunch. Lol. I didn't mention it before but I actually did add some idle speed and it made no difference.

Those speeds sound reasonable especially considering there was no change from before the fluid change.
No change probably should get that cross firing theory out of your head too.
Maybe, just to keep Pete happy, try cranking it up a little (about 50 rpm or so) and see what happens Just call it troubleshooting, you can set it back to where you had it pretty easily.. You can also watch the training video in the link below, if you can absorb everything he says, you'll never ever have another question about transmissions...........ever |

Have my doubts about that. The idles pretty well and it hasn’t changed all summer. And once the trans is warm the sound is gone completely at the same idle speed. Sound isn’t a rattle either, more of a heavy WOOSH WOOSH sound coming right from the transmission. |

I'd say the RPM is low and what you are hearing is the planetary gear set rattle.

Yeah I'll admit it's not super easy to hear on that video, and it was resolving by the second so it easier to hear at the beginning than the end. Answers... - only happens in gear at idle, goes away as engine / boat speed picks up pretty quickly (really anything much higher than idle); does not happen in neutral / with revving engine - engine speed (i'm going by the tach on the dash here which I don't feel is terribly accurate) - about 680-700 in neutral, maybe 620-650 in gear at idle (no adjustments made prior to this noise starting) |

First thing that comes to my mind is, I need to get my ears checked after listening to that video
Second thing is......how about more info, does this only happen at idle or can you be going let's say 20 mph and feel/hear it? Third thing that comes to my mind is, what's your idle speed when it's cold and making the noise. Both speed in neutral and speed in gear. Fourth thing.......nevermind, I can only handle 3 things right now.

Yes, or get worse before going away, it's highly varisble. It doesn't take much,

That’s interesting- yes, standard distributor. Would that go away after warming up a bit? We have had big temperature / humidity shifts. |

Additionally, If that engine is not protec but has std distributor, this is the time of year one can get crossfiring from moisture under the cap, it makes a good clang through the driveline

The first thing that comes to my mind is the damper plate failing.

('93 sport, 351 PCM, 1:1 trans) NO issues until recently. Boat sat a couple weeks while I was installing the tower. On the next run out, heard this sound when it was cold. Sounds like a clunk, can feel it slightly in the driver's seat. Feels a bit like driving over a very light chop slapping the hull. The first time I heard it I figured something was wrong, went back to the dock, poked around and checked trans fluid, didn't find anything off. So we went back out and it was gone. Boat ran normally. Just went out again tonight and it was clearly there again. I got in close while under way and it seems to clearly come from the transmission. And when coming out of gear it stops immediately, resumes back in gear. Once again after about 3 minutes it went away completely and the boat ran perfectly fine, including doing some wakeboarding. Are the nautique gods just mad at me for putting a tower on? Am I looking at a transmission rebuild? I was thinking I should do another trans fluid flush and see what that does. Video / audio: |
