Are you sure the reported ZDDP for Rotella is 1300 not 1200?

The phos and zinc numbers provided at the testing site are what they found to make up the ZDDP#s.    If I'm remembering the conversation correctly different Phosphates are combined with the zinc to help bind the additives , reduce emission problems and other issues that 100% zinc would cause.

If our schedules can align in the next few days I'll see if I can get him to get technical for better clarification.

The testing facility tests all kinds of fluids for government agencies and doesn't specialize in oil testing, all testing was done as a favor

Eat lunch,  don't worry about it, I think it's just a terminology thing .......You done good.

People have a good idea what oils have the zinc(ZDDP) levels they're looking for.

Personally I pick my oils strictly based on catchy names and container colors.

Here are my 2 favorites   Wink

They're the same thing, so why does this oil testing outfit seem to differentiate between the two in the first post in this thread?

That was my point

I switched to the Diesel 15-40W several years ago when oil issues started to be part of Camshaft issues.  Rotella, Delo or even Castrol Diesel 15-40W.  All of these have worked for me but my use is low on the boat.  Many Hot Rod owners run this stuff now to protect the cams.  I have yet to be told it does not work or be shown that some of the High Dollar Oils work better.   I think the test above shows the Rotella holds up just fine and has the right stuff in it.  Walmart keeps it on the shelf for less than $20 per gallon.  No downside I see.  If you have the newest boat with the Cats on them, you better read the manufacturers advice.  The older oil may affect those engines.  It may be to thick for those running Roller Camshafts also but for a good old flat tappet camshaft I think this oil is just fine to keep your engine purring.

I got it, new zinc is zinc and used zinc is ZDDP................That must be it Wink

They test flush fluids to make sure they are safe for disposal. Zinc and lead a major items they look for in their tests.

Well, this does nothing to clear up any confusion Wink

If they tested for phosphorus and zinc on new oil, then why not test for phosphorus and zinc on the used oil and call it phosphorus and zinc again, instead of giving you a rounded off number and calling it ZDDP this time?

Maybe I'm a little groggy and extra slow this morning, but I'm curious why you have numbers for Phosphorus, Zinc and ZDDP shown since Zinc and ZDDP are  basically the same thing.

If you look at any Used Oil Analysis report from Blackstone Labs, they give results for Zinc and Phosphorus in their reports. I looked at Blackstone because they're probably the most popular and highly regarded testing outfit in the world of engines

You can find about 6 bazillion reports with a Google search, so I won't put one here.

Also when an outfit like the PQIA tests new oil samples, they give results for Phosphorus and Zinc. No separate ZDDP number.

So.............an explanation of this unnamed outfits test process seems to be needed Wink

Interesting, real world comparison. Thanks for posting the results. Funny you mentioned the cleaner transom with the Shell Rotella. I own a '69 Dodger Charger with a 426 Hemi. These engines use oil from day one. Always have to clean oil / exhaust residue off the back bumper after a drive on the highway for any length of time. I started using 15W40 Rotella this past summer as well. Over the years I have used every permutation of Valvoline Racing Oil, Kendall GT, Brad Penn, Penn Grade One etc. One thing I noticed almost immediately with the Rotella was a huge reduction in the residue accumulating on the bumper after a drive. Still seems to use the same amount of oil though. I will continue using the Rotella in all of my flat tappet camshaft vehicles, including my '89 Nautique when I get it operational again. It is readily available everywhere as well as cost effective.
You know you are getting to be vintage when someone says "Back in the day..." and you can dispute their facts.

Mr. Mike.

Between a pregnant S.O. and 2 "Covid vacations" this summer has sucked for me!!!

Had grand plans of enjoying the lake every day the sun shined and the water was above 65°. Guess the joke was on me because it seemed like once the humidity level was over 70% and the belly popped out like a turkey temp gauge I was stuck looking for lake partners I trusted to drive the boat.

Long story short after seeing that running VR1 40w was causing higher than preferred start up oil pressure I decided to play scientist with different oils.

Here is the constants
1996 SN 176 351w with carburetor
383.4 hours on clock.
Oil pressure is eye ball averaged after it runs for 20 minutes at operating temps.
Oil would be drained with boat in garage , trailer level.
Oil after 8 hours of run time would be measured for quantity after being drained for 8 hours.
Oil samples in 1quart containers (mason jars) hand delivered to a local industrial facility who tests fluids for a national chemical laboratory (have requested that I not name them)

Oil 1-383.4 hours
VR1 40W
3 quartz , 600ML drained
zinc = 1472 ppm
phos = 1544 ppm
ZDDP = 1500 ppm
Gauge read 60-65 when at operating temps @ 2800 rpm sustained
**Longest time to get up to operating temps, sluggish performance**

Oil 2- 391.8 hours
Rotella T 15w40
4 quartz, 200ML drained
zinc = 1454 ppm
phos = 1062 ppm
ZDDP = 1300 ppm
Gauge read just just above 55 when at operating temps @ 2800 rpm sustained

Oil 3- 399.2 hours
AMSOIL 15w40
3 QUARTZ, 400ML drained
zinc = 1431 ppm
phos = 1441 ppm
ZDDP = 1400 ppm
Gauge read just below 55 when at operating temps @ 2800 rpm sustained
**. $78 and some change after 5% discount

Oil 4- 407.8 hours
Royal purple 15w40
4quartz, 100 ML drained
zinc = 1674 ppm
phos = 1290 ppm
ZDDP = 1400 ppm
Gauge read just below 60 when at operating temps @ 2800 rpm sustained.
*** Transom was dirtier than average with this oil***

Oil 5-415.9 hours
15W40 Farm Rated Heavy Duty(Rural King)
3quartz, 600ML drained
zinc = 1325ppm
phos = 1234 ppm
ZDDP = 1200 ppm
Gauge read just above 60 when at operating temps @ 2800 rpm sustained.
**This oil was recommended by local marine tech at the Nautique dealer who owns a Barefoot Nautique and drinks beer all day at the marina.   cheapest oil of the bunch

I know that was long winded and I blew a bunch of money changing oil basically every weekend. But I was curious and with a combined 22 days off for quarantining purposes I had the time.

That being said I put Rotella back in. Boat seemed to be snappier, transom seemed to be cleaner .
I have one last ride before the kid shows up, Girl friend requested a ride to look at the fall colors and I figure I better enjoy it while I can. .

the final price is always cheaper when the beer is free
