You might think I had that same stuck seal come up at sometime in the past
It would have had a huge leak without that seal

I owe you a beer. I checked the housing with a razor and sure enough the seal was hardened enough to appear to be part of the Transmission housing. I have now removed it and the new rubber seal fits perfect. THANK YOU. Now for the shaft seal. If most people are just pressing the new one in I will go with that. It definitely had some red type sealant/adhesive on the original when I removed it. Thanks for the help.

Not normal,,the large rubber seal is supposed to be there, it should have come that way from Borg Warner so .......use it
The shaft seal in most all the kits has a thin rubber coating on it's circumference and most people will install it dry or you could use a little Permatex 2 if you really wanted to. May be a silly question but are you sure the old one isn't hardened and stuck in place looking like part of the pump or the forward/reverse adapter that it bolts to ? Some people will tell you that if the seal is leaking, your pump is no good due to excessive wear/tolerances overpressurizing the seal and causing a leak That's not necessarily true, it's more likely a worn out seal from age or wear/corrosion on the input shaft causing the leak. Plenty of seal leaks have been fixed with a new seal and not a whole new pump. And................welcome to CCF |

I have a leak in the front seal of my 1982 Ski Nautigue velvet drive transmission. I removed the tranny and pulled the pump to replace the oil pump shaft seal and have two questions.
First, I bought a kit that came with a shaft seal and a larger rubber seal that is for the pump housing sealing to the transmission. MY pump housing had NO SEAL. Is that normal and if so do you use some kind of liquid gasket maker to seal that metal to metal junction?
Second the shaft seal had a red agent, like locktite on the outside sealing it to the housing, What is the best material/sealant to use when I press in the new seal?? Thanks I am new to this forum. I would like to do this right the first time and not have to pull the transmission again due to ineptitude. |
