There's this old saying that 90 percent of all carburetor problems are ignition related. OK, it's a bit of an exaggeration probably, but you get the idea.

Is the Mallory an e spark/ unilite module or a magnetic breakerless module?.

A good ignition tuneup including a new coil will at least take the ignition system out of the equation.

Since you and MrMcD are neighbors, I'd invite him over or even offer to bring the boat to his place so he could get another set of eyes on it Wink

Has the boat run at speed on the water since you've gotten it?

I should probably state for the record, I can replace parts on a car and boat but really dont know what to look for in terms of proper operation on a carb. 
this was my first go around with rebuilding a carb. 
i have never looked down a properly running Edelbrock carb to see 
i have adjusted the floats twice. I am not sure if floats are bad. 
I did not remove jets. i blew carb cleaner through them the first time and passages seemed fine so i let them be.After nothing really improved , i removed venturis and blew carb cleaner through passages again and changed out remaining gaskets. 
I have not messed with any of the electronic choke parts, choke opens up as it warms. 
i have adjusted the two idle mixture screws, they do affect the RPMS slightly but not that significantly. 
after reading and watching multiple videos, many people seem to think that is you go 1.5 turns out, you should be fine. I inspected idle mixture screws, i dont believe they are damaged. 
i have also added a fuel pressure regulator to the carb to keep fuel pressure below 6psi. 

Could this be an ignition problem? 
I have not changed the cap and rotors or wires? 
I did take some emory paper to the cap and rotor to expose fresh un-oxidized contacts.

Carter was the original builder of that carb, there is a Carter Rebuild manual available on line that might point you in the right direction, that design is normally pretty bullet proof, no problems but it needs to be set correctly.
Edelbrock may have the same repair manual available now since they have sold more AFB carbs in the past 30 years.

Carb may still have a problem.  Did you install all parts from the kit?  Float could be bad too.

picked up a 1985 or 1986 ski nautique with 351 commander engine a couple of months ago. 
it has a Edlebrock 4 bbl marine carb on it. 
Mallory electronic distributor on it. 

In my driveway: 
it idles okay at 800 rpms or higher, but sometimes dies. 
if i bring idle down to 600rpms it is little rougher and dies more frequently. 

If i accelerate quickly it dies or bogs. 

i have removed and cleaned out the carb multiple times. 
i have changed most gaskets but since it has come off multiple times the main gaskets could be questionable? 
when i operate the throttle i am getting a good squirt from the accelerator pump. 
when i add a little throttle slowly RPMS climb and then i will see little fuel in small droplets come off the primaries, when i add more gas the primaries seem to have a nice pattern of spray and seem to flow well. 
Choke is wide open during these times. 

when i have loosened the fuel line from carburetor is getting gas up to the carb. 
i checked engine and it was set at 10 degrees and timing marks on the flywheel move when i manipulate the throttle. 
i changed the spark plugs and set the gap to .044, i split the difference between factory and recommendations after upgrading to electronic distributor.

Thoughts??? Help
