+1 on the test drive. When I test drove my Martinique it started the rwp pulley broke loose, causing us to limp back to the dock. Of course I became disenchanted about the boat at that time but realized that was probably not the only thing that’s going to fail on a 40 year old boat. Over the few years I’ve owned it a few more things have gone south on it. Let’s just say I’m happy to be the steward of a classic!

But it tonight
Yes of course have him start it, non forced water is best. Pete likes to let scupper suck it up from a bucket. Pete’s method shows signs of poor water pump impeller and blocked engine block ports. Probably good idea from engine check After that a hose is fine Look at prop condition, not a deal breaker But could show bent stuff I absolutely love that boat good thing I’m not there I would gamble $5000 offer 4750 And smiles all the way home |

The biggest negative will be the flat keel. It will rattle your teeth if you are in rough water. No fix for that. If you are on a small lake that doesn't get rough, no big deal.
Also, the newer boats are much wider & roomier. The health of the stringers is also a big deal - there is a non-destructive tapping test you can do if the seller lets you.

Lake cruising and some casual skiing. What are some of the main red flags I should be looking for ?

Nice looking boat!
What do you plan to use the boat for? Getting the right type of boat for your interests is key. If you can get an experience boater to help you look at it, that will be a big help too.

Jack,
Welcome to CCfan. Do you have any pictures you could post? We could get a better idea from them.

Thanks I appreciate it. What specificity should I be checking to make sure it’s in sound condition. Especially when it comes to the engine because I’m not very experienced mechanically. For example Should I have him start it on the trailer with a water hose attached to it?

Welcome. You found perfect place to ask questions,
Those early years are my favorite and I think a great starter boat ‘Sounds’ like a good deal. I’m also curious about low low hours. Others will be along to advise on stringer checking for rot If it checks out BUY it quickly and join the vintage ski nautique fun here |

Beginner never owned a boat looking to get one and there’s a 1973/74 ski nautique available in my area they are asking 5,000. Their description-
“fully restored, new prop, Mustang v8 351 Windsor engine, New petronix ignition and coil. New tune up/ plugs. New oil change, well maintained. Runs like new, Original front seats too. Heavy duty 2 axle trailer with old style Ford moon rims and whitewalls. No rust, rot anywhere.” In the pictures engine looks clean says it has 160 hours which I have a hard time believing for that old of a boat but ok. I’m wondering if this is a decent deal and what to check on it to make sure it’s in good mechanical condition. I’m new to this community so I apologize for my lack of knowledge but I hope some of you can help. Thanks. |
