thanks for all the responses!

I got exactly the answer I needed! Ive just discovered that the PO has installed the wrong starter on the boat. I think this answers my non-start issue and all the backfiringLOL

Tyler,
Sounds like what you have described. is just cosmetic damage to the gel. It's where the gel has chipped off all the way down to the fiberglass. Strutural damage would be if there is cracking and or delamination of the fiberglass itself. It can be minor on just the outer portion of the glass or it may go all the way through.

My apologies for my lack of knowledge. Im still in the infant learning stage where I don't even know what questions to ask!

Do you mean how do you tell fiberglass from gelcoat? I don’t think anyone said “cosmetic fiberglass damage”.

Exposed fiberglass (gel damage) is just cosmetic. Structural fiberglass damage may not be.

Thanks for the response!

Yes I am working to ensure proper working order before I begin any aesthetic repairs. Perhaps my questioning is too soon. But the Hull has some dings that need to be repaired. In fact, in one spot fiberglass is exposed. I assume that it should be repaired prior to putting in water but admittedly I'm not actually sure.

Agreed, show us some pics, and make sure you're mechanically sound first. I've been honing my gelcoat skills the past couple of years, so I can help you get your head around it. I'm by far an expert, but I've made acou[ple mistakes you might like to avoid.. Let's see what you're starting with though.

Pictures would be helpful.
I personally wouldn’t put any time into cosmetics until I made sure it will run, float, and go forwards and backwards, meaning the motor and transmission is good.

Howdy fellas!

Im the proud owner of an 85 Ski Nautique.

Ive got some work to do on it for sure. This is my first boat. So if you have any suggestions for me id much appreciate it!

The boat isnt running right now (i think i can fix this in one evening), upholstery is lacking, rub rails are meh, and gel coat needs some work.

Please ask any questions or make suggestions for me. I was planning on starting with the Gel coat unless yall have any other suggestions. The color is Maroon and a sort of grey. Ive looked many places and cant seem to find anything on these colors. Any assistance is much appreciated!

Im stoked to be apart of this crew.
