Well I may have no choice but to retrofit. I have found long cracks on the pieces connecting the manifolds to the risers. They evidently had been "repaired" somewhere along the way then painted a slightly diffeent color which drew my attention to it. obviously someone didn't drain them one winter. No way I would ever trust welding cast thin walls like that to be water tight. Not saying that it couldn't be done, but it's not easy. It makes me wonder how many other cracks are opening up in other areas of the manifolds.
What would be the best retrofit bet? |

cheapest way out would be to have the surface decked,any automotive machine shop can do this, remove the studs and have them mill them till you get a good sealing surface use new gaskets,no sealer,torque properly go play.............you will open up a whole can of WORMS if you decide to retrofit any thing after market to a OMC product.BTW do youknow what OMC stands for???????????the Other Motor Company.........boat dr |

Took the pics on a lower resolution and then mailed them to myself using the "reduce size" option. Huh...who woulda figured...

Also removed the manifolds and they are pretty cerappy inside. I don't know how anyu of the gasket surfaces ever sealed...they are that bad. I am not even going to waste my time blasting and surfacing them and then possibly find out they leak. Time for some new ones.

Well I tried to upload the pics but it said each one was too large (165KB) and i cant upload anything larger than 36KB. I tried sending it to myself since there is an option to reduce the size but it only took it down to 56KB. Any ideas on how to reduce the pic size more?

finding the orginal style mite pose a challenge finding them. Most likely you are going to have to get PCM style and do a little hose work. Nothing major and if the hoses are old then it's not realy a big deal and you should replace them anyway.
can you take a photo of them? and post it? |

I have the older "snail" hump type manifolds and risers. Is there a replacement I can buy or do I have to find the original style to avoid changing all the water hose locations?

Sounds like you need new exhaust manifolds, The gasket between the riser and manifold could be bad. I would do a compression check on all cyclinders to verify that a head gasket or exhaust valve isn't bad and I would also remove the exhaust manifolds and pressure check them. What ever you do don't run the motor with the plugs in it until you find the source, otherwise you will do more damage to the engine and it won't be cover by warrenty.

Also can hear exhaust leaking on the right side...would gasket cause both problems?

I'm sure this might seem stupid to those more experienced in boats than me but here goes. I have 250hp OMC small block GM in a '76 Southwind 20. It has a newer Jasper long block with less than 100 hours on it. I have stored it correctly the one winter I have had it. I clamped the garden hose to the raw water intake hose and started the boat. It ranfine after the distributer work I performed but then I let it sit with the water runniong through it for a few minutes and it would not start. The cylinders were full of water and I could see leaking past the center exhaust gaskets. Needless to say I pulled the plugs and water ran out. Do I have a head gasket or exhaust/water gasket problem or is it worse...i.e. cracked head? Just wondered if anyone would have a guess before I tear all this down. Thanks guys and I appreciate all the help past and present. {sorry for the typo's) |
