Thanks again Ken. Yea I have trouble with pass words. was at the shop with cell phone in hand it was a lot easier to set up a new account then try and log on after 5 tries and 5 pass words. If it weren't for the feature on my lap top that saves passwords I would probably have more then 4 accounts... Thanks again. gong to put this engine back together.

I think your best bet is to click on the link below and watch the Video and then replace the rope seal with a 2 piece rubber rear main seal.
Once the little pin is out of the bearing cap, the rubber seal can be installed. Same part number as mentioned earlier, Felpro BS30136 or a cross reference to it. It's a direct replacement for the rope seal. Filling the hole that the pin was in with some RTV is a good thing to do before installing the seal. It's like any other 2 piece SBF seal installation once the pin is out. Now for the big question, how many different screen names have you had on CCF? You must be "not too good" with passwords or something? I came up with 4 just looking kinda quickly |

Coming back to the well of knowledge. Turns out this engine is a 1965 289 HP from the date code on the block and main cap identification. What I found is that the rear main seal was a rope type and not a rubber. oil wick lines are evident. The previous engine assembler did a not so good job trimming the seal before installing rear main cap. leaving a rather large shredded end of the seal material under the main cap before install of the cap. then they torqued it down, leaked as well as causing inconsistent wear on the bearing. All repairable as the engine did not have much run time due to the sever oil leak. looking for a part number on the ropeor fiber type seal. is there a number for it or does it come in bulk and trim your own??? Assuming that you're using the original reverse rotation crankshaft with the wick/helix/oil control lines at the rear main seal area of the crank, the rear main seal from an automotive application will work.
It's a 2 piece smooth seal that doesn't care which way the crank rotates. Felpro BS30136 will work or there are plenty of cross references to other brands. If you're using a different crankshaft from a normal rotation engine, you'll have a whole different set of issues to deal with as far as seals go.. For the front seal on a reverse rotation small block Ford, Felpro 17795 is a good number. The wick lines are in the seal itself. There may not be any cross references to other brands for this one. By the way, you mention a mid 60's 302, but the 302 didn't go into production till 1968 and most likely never showed up in a boat application till 1969, so you either have a later than mid 60's engine or a smaller 260 or 289 Ford from the mid 60's. The numbers above will work for a reverse rotation 260, 289 or 302
