I like the ARE unit as well. And when I received it from the OEM, they included all the cool little tools ;-)

A couple companies that I know of, that were using double taper shafts in the late 80's were Supra and Ski Supreme. They each had different tapers on the coupler end so there was no real standardization of the taper back then or today either. Ownership changes with both companies may have changed the shafts in later years. I guess that way you have to buy a shaft and coupler together from the same outfit Here's a link to one thread from CCF with some discussion and another link People can argue about tapers and keys all day long but, myself, I think you should get an ARE, so you can buy all the spiffy tools like the shaft decoupler, the special socket that works with it in tight clearance areas and the bar to keep the coupler from rotating during disassembly and reassembly. It's a chance to spend extra money ![]() Maybe you had the tools before or still have them, but they do make life easier especially in a tight clearance situation. I kinda figure either one will handle your power. I've used both with no real favorite

We've used both GP and ARE. Both are good. I believe the flange is slightly longer in the GP. Two years ago GP did not offer a 4" flange in a 1" shaft, so BFNs were out with GP. ARE has them.

When I go to Lake Powell, it sits in the water for 10 days or so. I once had a boat sink due to a bad shaft seal. I was young and dumb. I still get a bit worried -- perhaps over-worried -- when the boat is moored at Lake Powell in 20+ feet of water.
[ The real reason is that I like to tinker on the boat ] JQ

Like you I have installed one ARE dual tapered shaft and I liked it. It has been working well for 5 years now. What motivates the move to a new shaft seal? i just adjusted my shaft seal for the first time since install this past summer to slow a small drip. Once adjusted I leave the boat in the water for 4 days and there is no water to speak of in the bilge and most of that is from wet bodies coming inside the boat. Do you leave this boat in your ski lake all summer?

When, if ever, did boat manufacturers start offering dual-taper driveshaft couplers as opposed to the standard interference fit? I've worked on a fair number of Correct Crafts over the year -- mostly direct drives, as well as other DD boats from different manufacturers. I don't recall seeing any OEM "factory" configuration with a dual-taper coupler. Everything has been interference fit. Next question...why or why not?
I used the A.R.E. driveshaft on my 1994 Ski Nautique when I did a bunch of mods one winter. I liked the A.R.E. product. Now I'm thinking about installing the new O.J. Flex Gland Shaft Seal system on my 2001 SNOB. But, access to the shaft log is kinda tight on this model and I don't look forward to re-fitting the driveshaft coupler by heating it in a blacksmith forge first. Maybe I'll just cough-up the cash for a dual-taper unit. So...If I decide to go with a new driveshaft, what is the feedback on the A.R.E. vs. the General Propeller product? JQ
