That's probably coming from the rear main seal.
On a 78 you have a 2 piece rear main seal and the only good way to replace it is by dropping the oil pan to get at the rear main bearing cap which holds the seal halves in place. So.........that means the engine comes out to do the work or is a least lifted up high enough in the boat to be able to drop the oil pan. While you're doing that, replacing the damper plate on the flywheel is a good idea, unless that's been done recently Safety wise, out of the boat is better But first.............check that the oil pan drain plug or drain hose if you have a hose, is tight and not leaking, that would be a whole lot easier to fix Oil pans have been known to rust through and leak too

We think it is coming out from the bottom, at the oil pan at the back of the engine

You're putting it in the right spot.
Silly question maybe, but can you tell where it leaked from?

Long time since I've been online with everyone! We finished restoring a family owned 1978 Ski Tique and have relocated it to Smith Mountain Lake, VA! We need advice on the 302 Commander 4v engine. I did all the work to make the boat look pretty but i know nothing about engines so PLEASE GUYS, be gentle with me when i ask a few questions...1) where do i add oil in this engine? The engine was running great but when we added oil at the end of last season, it proceeded to leak almost the entire quart of oil into the bottom of the boat so we are wondering if a) we added oil in the wrong place (see the image below) or b) there's another issue that may or may not be related to the timing of the new oil being added. 2) Does anyone know a good engine guy on Smith Mountain Lake?
In the meantime, I will post some images...once I figure out how to do it!
