   Zach, so when you say 196 I assume you mean a 1990 Ski Nautique?

When you say it's running pretty rough that could be caused by a variety of things.  It could be engine problems, but more likely carb and ignition issues.  If you are not completely set on replacing the engine, you could do some basic stuff to see what the condition of things is.  If you did a compression test you'd know pretty quick the basic condition of your engine.  Assuming that was good, a description of what the rough running is, how and when you notice it, would help guide where to start troubleshooting.  You very possibly could have ignition that isn't advancing properly, a carb that needs a rebuild or replacement, etc.  Those problems can be fixed easily and for not too much money.

I'm not trying to discourage you from buying a new engine if that's what you want to do, just saying it's quite possible it could be running like new for much less money if you choose to look into the problems.

	You would need to verify but most of the 351 Engines will run like new again if you have the heads rebuilt. A leak down test would show if your problem is rings or valves. If it was run low on oil and has other issues certainly rebuild or replace the engine. Just noting options. $10,000 for a complete new engine or $1000 for a valve job. Mark

	www.MichiganMotorz.com Look at their “Marine Engines” tab. Go to “Complete Turn-Key Engines”. Look for ski boat inboard. Be prepared to cough-up over $12,000… A complete high performance carb engine is $10,000. Ouch. I would have my existing engine rebuilt with some high performance gear options and spend waaaaay less than that. JQ

	I have a 1990 196. It has a PCM engine (ford 351 block) that is carborated. It has 1500 hrs on it and is running pretty rough so needs a rebuild. Instead of that I wanted to replace it this winter with a new fuel injected engine. Is the best bet to buy a new PCM engine or get a crate motor and get it adapted as a marine engine. Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks!
