Thanks for checking on what it would look like.
On the install... The DUI was new and I was the only one that touched it and did not open the DUI top till after suggested here. The stuff seemed kinda sticky/gooey. Will wipe clean and recheck after some more run time. |

And a couple of hours later..............I think you can safely say that there's no way one of those coils will leak anything clear and gooey from inside the coil.
Like mentioned earlier I'd wipe it all off, run it and check again after a few hours

 Going back to post #1, since you wiped the gooey stuff off the rotor and center contact and then the engine started, it's not good stuff for conducting electricity.
The coil is epoxy filled, so it shouldn't really leak any gooey stuff. Does the gooey stuff feel like grease or is it sticky too. Are there any obvious cracks or signs of leakage from the coil? It seems to me that maybe somebody slobbered a bunch of dielectric grease all over the place. Some people put dielectric grease (a little bit) on the rubber washer when changing coils, but not that much Did you have somebody helping you install the distributor that might have taken the coil out and gone crazy with some dielectric grease? If it's running good and the coil physically looks good, I'd probably clean all the gooey stuff out and put it back together and run it and after a few running hours, take it apart again to look for more gooey stuff. I just happen to have an old sacrificial HEI coil that may get a little exploratory surgery performed on it

Happened to me this week, it ended up being the coil. If the coil isn't bad then it can also be a bad module

Will do. Can I assume that if there is gooey stuff that the coil is heading for failure? Read somewhere that early coil failures can be due to spark finding ground before the plug. I put new plugs and livewires on with DUI. Thoughts/history on that with these PCMs?

I'd pull the coil off the top of the distributor cap and see if if might be leaking some gooey stuff.
It can get down onto the rotor through the little hole that the spring loaded center contact goes through. |

This season was having cranking, but no start conditions this year when first starting. Would eventually start and run ok after. Thought it was fuel related. But recently did a more thorough check when it would not start at all and found I had 11.5 volt into the DUI, but no spark at cylinder 1. Installed the DUI about 2 years ago. Pulled the cap off and there was black grease/tar on the rotor center. Wiped it off, reinstalled and it started immediately. Was that grease supposed to be there? If not, any I can do to prevent it.
