My 98 SN always seems to run up a little further the first time in the water after the 8 month winter here in Minnesota, then settle back to the normal 165-175 range. This year it went past 200 but that was a gauge/sender issue that I have not completely figures out yet.

it will if you have fresh water cooling, otherwise the unit will probably either seize open or closed or rust apart..

I guess it'll be up to you to figure out what your problem is but the different thermostat style that you mention as "automotive" also gets used in lots of marine applications.
They interchange with each other, fit the same hole and work equally well as long as they're installed the right way (pointy side up) You can find both styles labeled as automotive or marine They're both built out of non rusting metals too like Stainless Steel and Brass (at least the ones in my pictures are). The Marine block is a little different. I would check first before installing an automotive 160 stat. The marine versions supply cool water to the exhaust 100% of run time.

Just checking that the automotive 160 F thermostat (Motorad 2000160 or 200160) for a 93 5.8 Lightning will work on a GT40?
I splashed the the boat for first time today and water is flowing, antifreeze came out and clear water is visible with no air in the strainer. Engine temp creeped up to 180 before I shut off. I'm hoping its just an air leak somewhere. I am going back up tomorrow and will test the thermostat in a pot. If it is the thermostat not opening, can I use the automotive 160? The pics on Rockauto look a bit different than the PCM version (Motorad version has a wider flange...but it could just be a stock generic photo). I hope to get her on the water this weekend!
