Hey Farmer,
I used to see a guy with one of those at the Wethersfield Cove on the Connecticut River all the time. His license plate was Tub Toy. There is also a guy here where I am in Maryland who has one as a daily driver - hell, it might be where he lives based on the stuff he is always hauling around in it. Good stuff, thanks. |

I remember seeing one of these at the Thriftway grocery in Brandon, FL back in the late sixties. It looked strange on land too.

Those pics were taken from my boat on the housatonic below Stevenson Dam. Thats the boat launch for Indian Wells State Park in the backround. Don't know him but I believe he's local. Saw another red one at Candlewood Lake in Danbury Ct. two years ago. They do look a little scary when the waves roll in .

Seen a green one out on our lake one Sunday. He waited till the weekend warrior season was over, had trouble with the ripples that were out there.

The one and only one I have seen in operation was in the early 60's and it had trouble because it wanted to take on water due to high waves. No free board

It's called an Amphicar. The Amphicar club has a pretty interesting site:
Amphicar History Looks like they were made in Germany from 61-68. About 3800 produced with some 3000 imported to the US. Looks like they used a Triumph 4 cyl engine. BKH |

...the old amphibious car - I think from the late 50's or early 60's. You can drive it on land, right down the boat ramp and into the water, switch gears and engage the two inboard style screws and take off like a boat...well all they really did was plow water, not too fast, but definitely unique.
