Doug,Electronic Fuel Injection,is a mechanical way to induct fuel and air into an engine. The two popular ways are Multi Port Injection and Throttle Body Injection. One uses one injector for each cyl, a more complicated but better way ,TBI uses a throttle body and common injectors ,usualy 2 to accomplish fuel distribution. Its just a high tech carb, with no fuel bowl.
Sounds like a carb problem ,a new carb would be far cheaper,S/B Ford 302 ,mine, loves the Holley 450 CFM, will idle for hours at 500 rpms.............boat dr

Doug, Sumitt has several kits to convert to MPI tho very pricey.Accel offers a complete kit for 2595.99,s/b Chevy; 2795.99 s/b Ford. Includes ECM,pump, manifold, all parts to make your carb go away. Sounds kinda pricey to give you instant start, fuel usage wont change much.
Holley has a kit also, but they have a lot of gotta haves with their system.
go to Summit.com and look at what is available..............boat dr
