just gotta PCM in yesterday, cant budge the shift lever if that helps any, all the aluminum starts yo gall,
happens often but no big deal |

I had some stiffness in the shift lever last year. Thought it was an adjustment at the helm or cable. I tried making some adjustments and then figured out that the shift lever above the trans was rubbing on the invertaflo. I readjusted the rubber mounting under the muffler to raise it about 1/4 inch and all was well.

Not sure how many hours you have on this thing but while you're working around the shift lever contoller, you might as well pick up a couple of new brass pins that the throttle and shift cable attach to at the shift lever control and replace those. They're probably getting to the point that they need replacing.

Also make sure there isn't any sharp/tight bends in the cable that can cause the problem as well.

Try isolating the source. Is it the lever, the cable, or the tranny itself? First, disconnect the cable at the tranny end. Then shift. If you experience the same stiffness, it is likely not the tranny but the cable or shift lever. If that is the case, disconnect at the lever end. If you have the same stiffness it is at the lever not the cable. You can lube/replace the cable or lever. If it is in the tranny, you'll have to rely on Eric for help.

The model number on the trans is PCM -40A. The ratio listed, from what I read is .23/1. Is there a post with instructions on this topic? Thanks |

What trans? PCM 1.23? if so some of the aluminim near the spool stars to gall and allows it to tighten. you may have to dis-a$$emble and hone out and clean, its a pretty common problem

The shift lever in my 96 Sport, 265 HP carbureted, is stiff from neutral through initial engagement. After placing in gear, it moves fine. There is not a problem getting the engine and transmission to respond, the lever is just very stiff to initialize. Can any of you experienced folks offer any suggestions?
