Disregard my earlier statement about 230 in 1970. Pete's right. I read too much stuff last night. BKH

Mack, this is about the only way I found to change my starter, I had other reasons for pulling the engine but the starter was primary.

I did a quick search on google and found a site which provides OMC maintenance manuals. It appears that OMC did offer a 230 in 1970. Without buying the manual, it did not list the displacement. As said previously, it could not be a 305 as that configuration was not offered till 76. BKH

Another big bonus is the rear/top mount starter
If you've changed one of these in a deal like Michigan Daves pic above, there a godsend! Great Looking 37 y/o Boat |

Jim,
Is there a brass plate with the boat hull ID stamped on it? On my 69 Nautique it is stamped "SN1593." I think it is typically found on the port side on the floor, just inside the dog house. If you find that number you can call the CC factory and they may be able to give you some information about your boat, such as when it came off the line and maybe some of the original equipment it had. my .02...
Even though the water pump is old and a bit of an oddball, White Lake was able to get me an impeller with no trouble and that was just a periodic maintenence item, the older one was still fine I've been running that pump for three years with no problems so I wouldn't worry about it. As for as the originalness of the engine, I copied this table from some website, so I can not attest to its accuracy. But I know when I got my boat I did some homework and concluded the same as above, that the 305 came out in 76. If thats true, it's either a replacement or a 350. My guess is its a replacement since it is identical to my 76. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> General Engine Block Specifications While 6 different bore size blocks have been produced, the small block engine can be classified into 3 bore sizes and 3 main bearing sizes. 283 blocks (3.875" bore, 2.3" main), 302/327/350 blocks (4" bore, 2.3" or 2.45" mains), and 400 blocks (4.126", 2.65" mains). In 1968 the main bearing saddles were increased in size from 2.3" to 2.45". 70, I wouldn't worry about the engine being original or not since just as Riley said, it's a nice boat. I would have to say that it is not the original engine due to the years as well as the other more modern components he used.
Just for your info; With wood boats in a ACBS judging, points are given for having the original engine. No points are added or taken if a non original engine is the proper type and close to the same year as the boat. However, points are taken away if the boat has been repowered with modern power. |

I have a 74 Penn Yan with a 225 horse OMC and it is a 307 chevy. It can not be a 305 (if its original) because as stated above that block didnt start till '76. I owned a 76 Chris Craft supersport that had the 305 and it was also badged as a 225hp.
The chevy 327 was also used a lot as a marine engine in the late 60's and into 1970. I believe it well could be a 327. This would explain the 5 extra hp. over the 307, or the 305 badged engines. That water pump is a stout unit, new impellers are available and are the same as the stringer mount I/O pumps. Here is my 1974 307ci chevy 225 horse dave |

Eric, I dont think Chevy started making the 305s til around 76 or 77.. 1970 cars had 307 or 350 ci engines... Im not 100% sure ,but maybe a few 400 small blocks around then also..but never saw a 305..that early..? btw, Jim , Still a great deal on a great boat! |

70, you got an interesting boat there. If it's original, it's really interesting because of all the later model hardware. If not, no big deal. It looks like a nice boat, and for what you paid, you're not going to get hurt. Enjoy it.

70, I can't answer if it is unreliable or not, It is just not common. It may last much longer than a "normal" inboard raw water pump because it is build like an outboard motor water pump?
I changed it right away and did not use it. I wanted a pump that I could easily get parts for. |

from the pictures it's hard to see anything about the pumps are you talking about the raw water pump or circulation pump?
RWP some are out dated and hard to get parts but a new sherwood like the fords have should be able to mount up, maybe fab a bracket worst case if needed is 2_naut's talking about the RWP or circl. ? I wouldn't think there would be any trouble sourcing a circ pump. |

Are these water pumps unreliable? What can I swap it out with. I can't stand unreliable crap so if it is recommended that I upgrade it then I would love to do so. Thanks!

70,..I mentioned the water pump..That looks like the original OMC water pump. Its a bit odd compared to the raw water pumps that we normally see on the other marine conversions. My cuddy OMC 250 had one just like it. In the documentaion that I received with my boat, a marine dealer noted that most of the rebuild parts are no longer available. Now I have not personally tried to find parts for it so I really can't say for certain.
I use the cuddy on lake Erie and wanted to make certain that I had a very dependable water pump so I installed a new cranshaft driven pump. Easy conversion since I had room in front of the engine. |

the 230, chances are that it is a 305, see if you can pull the cast numbers off the block right behind the heads at the back, if you can pop a valve cover and grab those casting numbers also

I'll see if I can't post another topic here with out it turning into a Jery Springer show.
When I picked up this jewel "I was told" by the cat I go her from that this is the original engine. Well, we all know what happened last time I made mention of what I was told so I am trying to type as careful as I can. Is this the original engine or not??? I have had comments both ways. In saying that, let's get into the subject.....what are your thoughts? This craft is titled as a 1970 Correct craft with a motor number (per the title) as 21344097. It is a 230 OMC and "I was told" that this was a Chevy 305. Can anyone confirm or deny this? There was also some talk about this water pump or something to that affect. Not having a lot of savvy with this older junk I really don't know what the point was. Any help there. If you need anything further from me as far as marking on the engine just holler back. The cover comes on and off with in 2 seconds and I can get you what ever else you may need. Thanks in advance for all of the feedback. Jim ~ 505-220-3460 (cell, any time) |
