I replaced the 32 amp alternator with the 51 amp alternator w/ internal regulator sold through DIM. I was adding a stereo and wanted the extra juice. Changed to a voltmeter at the same time. Very easy change over. Vince answered all of my questions.

My engine has an Interceptor Starter with solenoid on top. I went to a "single wire" marine alternator with internal voltage regulator and got rid of the external voltage regulator and solenoid.
Very clean wiring, easy to work around and it's worked well all summer. |

Keith-
I had my stock 32 amp alternator rebuilt at a alternator/starter shop for $40.00 and you can by voltage regulators all day long at any local parts store. I just recently bought one from auto zone that is solid state (meaning there is no mechanical coil/relay towers - it is a printed cirucit board) for $10.00..... |

It's going to run about $85 for a rebuilt alternator that uses an identical casing. I don't know this stuff all that well but I think he told me it will be about 75 amps up from about 30 amps I guess.

What is that costing you and how many amps? I may be interested in doing the same thing.

My regulator went on my 1979 PCM Ford 302. My local guy recommend updating the alternator with a delco marine alternator that has an internal regulator and also puts out more amps.
Beyond being an updated solution, it will cost less and be ready Monday vs. 3 weeks from now (regulators are hard to come by I guess). Does anyone see any issues? Thanks, Keith |
