I don't think it's alignment ether because the problem is intermittent plus it would take a major misalignment before you could feel it. With problems like this, sometimes you wish that it would just stop dead so you could find the problem! You may be chasing this for awhile. Have you looked at fuel delivery? Tank pick up, anti-siphon, rubber fuel line, fuel pump, PSI to carb?

81....get under the boat and turn the prop by hand(not running of course)it should turn with very little effort and evenly with no binding spots. If it does not turn like that...see Eric's alignment post.
New floor, mounting bolts solid....thats all great , but the engine still has to be aligned! Check it so you know for sure! |

i don't think it's alignment. all redone floor/stringer's 5 years ago very solid feeling mounting bolts tight through rails and no problems before new packing. not equally spaced just a light intermittent rubbing. i'll put in thursday and try to be more specific. thanks. skip

I think you'd have to have an alinment issue to feel any drag as you speak of.Is it harmonic, equally spaced time wise between the increased drag?

high hour stock 351/velvet drive/rebuilt carb/well tuned/runs really well/idles smoothly and accelerates to top speed perfectly/water temp steady/all seems good except this new light "drag" after repacking stuffing box.

81, They will run warm at first and then cool down so that is normal and not the intermittent slowing you are getting at cruising. Tell us more about the boat.

watch your tach carefully and let us know if you see any spikes or anything out of the ordinary when this happens, please post anything else that you can think of that might be different while you are operating the boat

81, Something else must be going on since I doubt if you would notice a drag from a too tight shaft packing. Was the shaft log (port) and packing assem. running hot?
