The shaft has to have either a woodruff key or a roll pin in the shaft to keep the steering wheel from rotating, pull the pin or remove the key , the helm will slide out of the rear ..........boat dr

I am sure someone could help if I described this better. The unit is completely detached from the dash.
I have the shaft which is enclosed in a molded cone-shaped meltal housing and I have the two-piece steering wheel mount hanging off of the shaft. I want to throw out the shaft and reuse the steering wheel mount, but I can't separate the pieces. The shaft is caught on one side by the tab/joint that keeps it from passing through the hole and it caught on the other side by the three hole mount that is part of the cone shaped housing. Thanks for anymore help. Digital pictures might be next, I suppose... |

Did that already and still confused. I have the two pieces apart but they are hanging on the shaft and molded shaft cover. I can't get the shaft assembly separated from the two pieces.
It's like one of those bent iron puzzles. Thanks... |

It comes apart. There are some phillps head screws behind the steering wheel and some nuts and bolts under the dash as well.

My steering cable broke in the helm on my 1984 "2001." I bought a new rotary helm and qc cable. I am trying to remove the original steering shaft from the two-part wheel mount (that was attached to the outside dash).
There are no more bolts or screws to unfasten. The base of the molded steel cone that encloses the shaft looks like it should slip out of the black oval that mounts to the dash, but it doesn't. Any advice? |
