Hi, I wash the boat every time I take it out of the water which in the summer occurs at least once a week. The cracks were not there last time I washed it??? I will get pics ASAP my internet at home is shot and it's not possible to do it at work.

Lisa, Are you sure the cracks haven't been there for awhile and you have just noticed them? Sometimes, a small crack will be hard to see until it gets dirt in it and then due to the contrast it is visable.
How are you doing on pictures? |

In order to get the cracks the glass had to be stressed beyond its limits. When old floors and stringers fail this happens because they are no longer providing adequate support. A single incident of severe impact could cause cracking.
Kinda like people say when "before I adjusted the carb it was running just fine" ... before the floor/stringer repair things were just fine? May not be able to provide an explanation. But if it seems the stringers and floor are solid then you can just repair the cracks. |

I am confused...I had the boat gutted down to nothing inside then had the entire inside rebuilt and the engine put back...could the decking be too close to the hull and then contract and push cracks into it?? Lisa

I just don't know why your cracks would suddenly occur. I could see where the cracks would come from when the first floor repair where the glass delaminated from the wood you might have undue flex.

I have only had floor done (twice). My boat was pristine I never needed to do anything with the gel coat. I never even had one crack in the sides. They had the boat for a long period of time without stringers and floor in it. I wonder if the hull changed shape? I had no idea that could happen.

So this boat was rebuilt recently and now the cracks have developed? What came first - the gelcote work or the stringer/floor repair? I know that when the boat does not have stringers/floor in it during the rebuild process the shape of the hull can actually change. I tried to be very careful to keep the boat supported.
Inspect along the edge of your floor and the floor is not separated from the hull. Inspect all visible connections of the hull and stringers. |

I think so... The boat is stored at the lake so I can't take pictures till this weekend. I have pictures of the new stringers but not the decking. I am sorry that I don't have more info for you but I was in shock when I left the Lake on Sunday. Lisa

Lisa, I know this is the second repair. Leo didn't read the thread well enough and may have even missed all the previous threads on your problems! I was just explaining to him the use of treated lumber.
Concerning the cracks, we really can't tell without knowing how the second job was done. This is why pictures would be great. Are the cracks running the length of the boat and are they at about the level of the floor? |

This is the second repair. All the pressure treated is out and the entire job has been done again with the right type of wood. But what would cause all the cracks on both sides of my boat? Lisa

Leo, Pressure treated lumber especially the new "green" type should never be used even dry. There is a chemical reaction with the resin. It also sounds like they used polyester resin and not epoxy. If you used treated on a repair you will have problems. Hopefully you at least used the epoxy on your repair(s). |

They didn't let the pressure treated wood dry. They sound new to the fiberglass repair business.

I dont have pictures of the cracks yet. I just saw them yesterday and had a nervous breakdown. I have pictures of the first floor replacement but that won't help the spider cracking situation. The first guys used pressure treated lumber for stringers and all the fiberglass delaminated from the wood. The floor that is in now is from scratch. I will try to get some pictures posted. I have crap internet it's dial up. Lisa

Lisa, I'm trying to get a idea what was goofed up the first time and what the second guys did to fix it.
A lot of people including myself have found that downloading photos first into photobucket.com and then into CCfan works real good. Whatever software the photobucket site uses, the CCfan site loves. It also gives you a easy tool to downsize the photos into a "website" size. Have you brought the problem up with the second repair guys? Maybe we should see it first. Try the photobucket. You will need to set up a photobucket account for yourself. It's free!! |

I have the photos from the first repair but I have always had problems trying to attach them on this site. The second repair I have a couple of pictures and a bill but that is all. What about the second repair can cause the stress cracks? Lisa

Lisa, I think you should find the time to post the photos you said you going to. It will show everyone the stringer repair problems you have gone through. The stress cracking in the gel sounds to me that it may be related. You did get the documentation and photos from the second repair didn't you?

Help? I pulled my boat out of the water yesterday after it being at the dock about one week. I now have sixteen large spider cracks on the sides of my boat. It was pristine when I launched the boat last week. What could have possibly caused such damage? How can I fix it? If I fix it will it happen again? I have had the boat 5yrs problem free until I replaced the floor and now I have no end of trouble??? Lisa
