Dude,
That reminded me of something the tech did before he put the new alt in. He tested every fuse, both in the cab and under the hood. I asked him about it and he told me his brother-in-law was going through alts every 3 months. Turns out his kid had blown some fuse (he didn't say which one) while putting in a radio. Might be something, might be nothing. Excel alt is running great so far - 500 miles in 2 day. Not much of a test, but that is where we are so far. Mike |

62 wood,
It was re-maned. Brand was Excel, I believe. Tuck the Napa receipt in your glove box, in case yours fails any distance from your "home" Napa. At first the guy asked me for my receipt until I reminded him of the conversation we had had 2 weeks earlier. It all came back to him, which helped. I have no idea how this would have played out if I were away from home. My guess is not as smooth. Riley - I went to Napa because so many members here have had positive Napa stories. I agree the warranty is attractive, but it won't charge your battery when you are in the middle of who knows where. But what does one do? I carry 2 hub kits and all necessary tools when I trailer the boat, which is every weekend. I have a spare impeller, spare battery, spare shaft packing, spare prop. I have spare belts for both boat and truck, I have spare tires for both...where does it end? I think jbears method of duct tape, hammer and really big hammer is the way to go. Think of the fuel you save not carrying all that "spare" weight. There is prepared, and there is OCBD. Where is the line? Screw it, a AAA card and a receipt for any warranty parts will get you farther and faster than all the stuff I'm hauling. Thanks to all, Mike |

My 96 Suburban acted that way when it needed an alternator. I buy the best reman. Napa sells that are warranteed for life. I've only replaced one in the suburban, but had a Ford p/u that I put 4 in over about a 6 year period. I figured it was the truck, but if Napa sells junk, at least they back it up for life.

Mike,
Was the alt. you put on new or re-maned? I put a NAPA alternator on my 96 Silverado two weeks ago...It was new, but you kinda have me worried.... |

Thanks everyone, even the Napa guy said their alts are crap. Bought a new one from a local parts store and the Napa guy swapped it in at no charge and refunded the money for the bad one.
Imagine that, an honest parts guy who cares about customer service. Just kidding, I know a lot of the parts guys are good, honest people. But we've all met some who were not. Thanks again, Mike |

The volts should drop to a "float" state of around 12 when the battery is fully charged.

Steve,
LOL, Thanks for the diagnosis, I feel much better. I actually do own a Ford. It is just a little Silversmoke Gray Mustang. Built in April 1964. It runs great, but it has a generator, not an alternator. Thanks again, Mike |

Hey John,
Love the Ford power plant, not a big fan of everything they wrap it in. Just me, but the newer trucks are looking better. Maybe some day... Mike |

Thanks 62,
I usually get the whole amps/volts thing right - good catch! Belt was replaced within the last 5000 miles as well as the tensioner and idler pulleys - learned that the hard way with my old 90 suburban. Batt terms are tight, I will inspect the ground cable in the am, but it should be good, I replaced that cable 2 months ago. Thank you for your help, Mike |

First off ,I think your reading volts not amps..
Did you replace the belt(long shot?)does it have good tension?... Also wouldnt be the first replacement alternator to be bad...Take it back to NAPA and have them test it... Also make sure you have good ground and clean / tight battery cable terminals... |

Hey Guys,
I'm stumped, but that's not had to do. The tow rig is a 1998 Silverado K1500 p/u. I had been having charging problems so I did the obvious things the uninformed do, I starting swapping in new parts. So far: Battery Starter Alternator all from Napa. The alt. did the trick and I was getting a constant 14 amps on the dash gauge. That was 2 weeks ago. Tonight driving home, I checked the gauge before I pulled out of the garage - a steady 14. About 8 miles down the road I glance at the gauge and it is reading a steady 12. Looks to me like I'm running on straight battery voltage. Pull over, do a quick visual and all looks fine but the alt is louder than I remember the old one being. I get most of the way home and I have no choice but to turn on the headlights. Now it is reading just above the low-side red zone. Made it home, did a more thorough visual and all looks fine. I'm lost, any ideas? Thanks, Mike |
