lol, rust never sleeps.
Can't believe I'm quoting Neil Youmg, but lack of sleep makes you loopy. I'm on a big project - I get to sleep in Nov. CCF is my only diversion. Can't wait until I am "retired" like you, then the real fun will begin! |

Hmm, I was sure I was buying lunch.
I figured you had a forklift or some other means of moving things around your shop. They are both 10-17-001's according to the data plates. I am hoping to get a trans rebuild, new shaft (double-taper), damper plate, cutlass bearing and alignment on the Tique - plus additional recommendations that only you can provide and that will drain my bank account and max out all my credit cards. You know I'm joking. About the credit cards, that is. As far as the 351 with the 10-17-001, I basically want an "Eric Lavine once-over assessment" on the 351 as well as a rebuild for the trans, new damper, yadda, yadda yadda... All I ask is: no pink paint - I know you've joked about it for others... See you in 5 weeks, Mike |

the early 10-17-001 and 002's, used 1 reverse plate, then later on when the 10-17-003 and 004's evolved they went to 2 reverse plates and a seperator plate between them. I wont know the number untill i dis-assemble and you can decide what trans you want back in the boat, yes i have forklift. I'll walk you through what we will do to your trannies and i might even buy you lunch
thanks Eric |

Hi Eric,
The 78 SkiTique has a 10-17 in it. That is the one that lost reverse. So I have 2 10-17's coming your way. One is mated to a 302 in a complete SkiTique on the trailer and the other is a 1979 351 with a 10-17 on a cradle. Stupid question - you have what we need to hoist the 351 w/10-17 out of the bed of truck, right? October 12-14 is lookiing the best for me, let me know if that will work for you. As always - Thank you, Mike |

the 10-17 would be the best choice in your boat, thats if you have a as1-71c in it, you decide, im starting to slow up, it was a pretty rough summer, many hours and when i start to get slow i dont know what to do with myself

Eric,
It's all good. I think I know your online personality enough to know when you are busting chops. I like the fact we can bust on each other without offending anyone. I'm trying to figure out my Oct-Nov schedule so I can pull the Tique out to you. Definetly need a trans rebuild and I'd like you to give her the once-over and get your opinion on some other things. I also have a 351 with a 10-17 hooked up to that I'm thinking of loading into the pick up to make the trip also. See you soon, Mike |

It really is! I fiddled and futzed with the alignment both in and out of the water over a few days, and I believe it to be as straight as possible. Eric, thanks again for your align thread. There were a few other things I did. It seemed natural to try to bring the rest of the related parts up to date, and I am so very happy that I did. I got a new damper plate from Eric, my prop fixed at delta, a cooler from SECC, new hoses from skidim, and new fittings from napa(Eric swiped mine?!!? LOL, but did ease my panic when he said napa would have them) I also had to shim the strut a hair and I may have overdone it a little on new parts, but I'm starting at go and sleep better knowing things are solid. I did the last aligning on the water by ear just listening and making small adjustments. Vibrations are nil with index finger steering at WOT and 0 pull to either side...gotta luv it. The shifting is also super smooth. The funny part is that I didn't know the prop was out until the rest was eliminated. I noticed it only after close inspection. Thank you so much to all who have helped me along the way! You guys are the best! Greg |

i never ever see chunks of brass in the bottems of these trannies, the problem i see on these borg warners is, we just had a brand new trans fail from the trans running low on oil and it took the pump out putting all the metal inside, you wont find it in the bottem of the trans because oil goes from the pick-up inside the trans to the oil pump and then to the spool valve and then to the forward or reverse circuit, in this case when i took the piston out of the forward cylinder all the fine metal was inside the cylinder slung to the outside walls from centrifigal force, so it really is not prudent to have a filter in line, dont get me wrong it wont hurt anything and the screen in the bottem is to prevent chunks from going into the pump and at that point its to late anyways. Also when i remove the reverse piston it has gray sludge that also gathers heavily in that cavity. The guy's on this site are maticulous and probably change thier oils per the schedule, and remember that brass is softer than steel and wont hurt a thing and if there is chunks again its to late

I might mention that I've never heard a PCM PP tranny make any noise, ever, when being put into gear. If theres one very positive aspect of the PP trans it's that it shifts smoothly and quietly relative to the ZF's and BW's I've encountered on MCs and Malibus.

Ouch, thats a kick in the berries.
Would it be prudent to add a tranny filter in the manner i did when considering steel plates instead of relying on the window screen? I'm thinking the bronze and fiber particles are softer and son't hurt seals and bearings, but will this steel-on-steel may be more agressive? |

over the years ive recieved a ton of calls for transmissions chirping when they are put into gear and just recieved one the other day, it happens on all makes and models and is very common, the chirp is created at the last milli-second when the bronze clutches grab, and the chirping does not cause any harm to the transmission, I have a different type of plate im starting to use and they were actually designed by GM. It is a steel plate and is treated and are called Kolene steels and used in high performance applications. they are jet black in color and the process used to make the plates is that they heat the plate and quench it with salt. they were designed for chirping transmissions and are a great addition to rebuilds. they are very resilant to heat and allow the trans to run cooler due to frequent forward/reverse shifting. Along with the kolene steels i have a different plate im trying also and have used in the past, they are grooveless red eagle plates and also can handle high heat and being grooveless they have more surface area for co-efficiency of friction. with the combination of these 2 plates which no one else uses are a perfect match for these transmissions and will increase the life and performance especially when shifting, if you have interest in putting them in your trans in the future i will get you a set and walk through with you the correct clearance for these plates
