pretty common problem on Paragons, alot of guys will raise the bleeder with pipe, no real cure, fresh oils usually have foaming agents, this might help a little

Eric, You never commented on Tom's statement about the trans frothing fluid out the breather at high speeds. I'm curious!

I had an old Century Buccanner 17
Mostly the sme hull and different deck,it would suck air t the prop and straighten out in the corners.I bought an unbalanced rudder from Glenwood.It would turn very well after that,but since it had the deep vee to the hull it turned better if you backed out a bit lrt it take a set then added power back during the turn.Also it too had some lag screw problems.On it I used a long bit and removed wood till I found good fiber in the shavings coming out and then filled with Epoxy.Worked great I still know where this boat is and still in use.I repowered it in !987 about with commander 300. Ols Century's are nice rides,I'm still looking for a Resorter 17'w440 or 454 munday |

From the Century Club web site:
1973 MKII 17' runabout. This boat was available with one of three drive options, a v/drive inboard, a jet drive or an IO. These boats were 50mph+ boats, and were built from 1971 through 1975, in 1976 these were replaced by the small Arabian. Nice boat. Interesting it mentions they started production in '71. The hull number would tell if it was possibly a '70. Script "Century" on the side indicates its an early iteration whatever year it is. I'm not sure when they went away from it, but I thought '69 was about it. It should do 50 easy with the wet foam removed. The front light is also set up to hold a staff with a burgee! It's nice to see another 340 running strong. |

Yes, it is nice, and the glass is thick like old CC's. Only a compound buff and it would look great, just few scratches. The white line on the side is just an artifact of reducing the size of the picture to 25%. Its a mean looking boat on the water. Its sitting lower in the water than it did years ago, I think the cavities are saturated and I know some lags spin so floors and stringers are in order Its most likely the 1:1 because its spinning a 13x14 prop, original I bet, its stamped 4/70 It would really fly with dry foam, a modern prop, and an aluminum diet on the manifolds (or ss) |

those 340's are screamers if like you said you get them dialed in, is it a pv31? if so it is a 1:1 if pv32 then its a 1.5 and a pv33 guess what...would be a 2.00, i would imagine its a 1:1, I get $3200.00 swap out for those trannies, they are rare and i get alot of calls for them. thats for reference in determining the value of things, it really looks like a nice boat

Will do.
I learned/reinforced some things on this project. When the plug readings are all over the place, its an indicator they are firing at different times. Ditching the floppy automotive accel dualpoint for the YM cured that. That produced seat-of-the-pants power. The other is that the engine's state of tune can really induce and exacerbate a porpoising problem. This thing used to flop above 30 mph but now its rock steady simply beacuse the engine is strong and responsive. Makes sense now but the difference is beyond dramatic. |

see who did the work, im curious and hopefully they did put u-joints in it, I had to buy 2 gears for the back end of a Paragon v-drive recently, they list at $750.00 and $1020.00 if you take care of the trans it will take care of you, this guy didnt like to check his oil, thats ok with me, I paid the mortgage this month because of it

Thanks eric, I may need to do that. but it will out for the season by the weekend.
If it ever becomes available, I'll try to steer it to an enthusiast not a hack. Who knows. The boat has a lot of potential and a great foundation. The tranny was out of the boat just 3 years ago, so its a shame it looks as it does and I'm certain it didn't get the full breakfast package you could have given it. It tends to froth fluid out the breather at high speed. I'll try to get a look at the invoice to see if the ujoints were changed. |

f-in beautiful, Id love to have her. Gottaski, have two of those water cooled jackets in my shop as we speak, remember i worked for Paragon for 12 years, I know these trannies better than i know the back of my hand, seen many of these over the years because of improper winterization, people do not get all the water out of the v-drive section and it cracks the housing, another very common failure and very expensive failure is the angle housing, there are 2 u-joints inside of it and when they let loose....they let loose, good idea to change them if you dont know the history of the boat, I get a very very good discount on Paragon parts if you need any. there also is a reverse adjustment on the trans. If you'd like you can call me and I'll give you a few pointers on the trans 877-369-6693

Thought yoous guys would like to see a 1970 Century mK II 340 in decent shape.
Now that I set it up it goes really good despite being saturated, I suspect, and everthing but the carb and distributer is cast iron and heavy. Put in a new Mallory YM, my old holley 600, 2" spacer and hardline and it runs nice now. Very strong. goes about 47 with a mildly muckled prop; I'm sure it has more to find but thats good enough to get it out of my yard and back to the joe who asked me to get it operating, he couldn't get on plane this year, besides, it doesn't turn well under power, need some rudder mods too, new prop, other manifold needs to go, too. So it will get even heavier with another osco. Yes, it looks this good after being in the water all season. Original gell. Orig apolstery. Has a padded rear deck that I had off for this service. Fun but its no skiboat 340 chrysler/Paragon vdrive enjoy |
