Hooray - new starter arrived yesterday from Go2Marine & I'm back in business. Primed the carb & she started straight up.

Well after taking off the starter & disassembling the problem is clear.
The brush box assembly is completely smashed to pieces, the armature is badly damaged at the brush end also. It seems that due to rust on the output shaft the starter gear locked in after the engine started.
Hence, I will be ordering a new starter today.

Thanks for the help guys.
I have tried jumping the relay to no avail other than a bucket load of sparking.
The starter will be pulled this afternoon & checked tomorrow.

Yes. That way you are determining if the relay is the problem. If it starts "normal" when you jump the relay... the relay is suspect. Make sure you have enough juice making it thru your cables. Bad connections, corrosion, cable size, and not enough juice from your battery, should all be checked as well.

I'm no expert but I had a couple of old Ford vans that ate starters. The starter would pull major current to try to get it to spin. Lights would dim, and cable would get really hot. So it's possible your starter is not functioning right and drawing major amps and causing your problem. Have you pulled and tested the starter yet?

BTW... I'm no expert and don't play one on TV.   Just my humble advice.

OK, so when I jump the relay, won't that send full power to the starter & theoretically try & start her (assuming starter is functional).
Another symptom I noticed last night was that the when held in the start position, it seems that all power is lost, ie the lights dim, gauges read zero etc. This happens whilst on jump start or trying to start via battery.

Yes, Jump the big posts with the big wires with a screw driver. I would find a good auto electric shop to take a look at the starter before you go to the trouble of getting a new one from the states. They may even have a source if they can't rebuild. If you go new, make sure you get the proper rotation for a reverse rotation engine.

OK, thanks for the prompt reply.
By jumping out the relay - you mean run a wire between the two major cables..right???
If I still experience the same probs, is it a fair indication that the starter needs a reco??
If so, do you feel I am better off ordering one from the states, or getting my existing one reconditioned over here in Aust?

Jump out the relay and check the voltage you get at the starter. You may have a bad relay or the starter needs work.

I am having a problem starting my 1980 SN, standard 351W.

It was rested for around 8-9 weeks whilst I completed some landscaping & my wife had a beautiful daughter for us
Upon going to spark it up the other day, at first she went click, click, click - so I figured I had a battery issue & put it on the charger. After a good charge, I went to start & cranked her over to prime the carb, gave a couple of pumps on the throttle and it fired then started, ran for a couple of seconds, then made a clunk similar to ramming into gear and stalled out.
When I went to re-start all I get is a click at the relay & nothing else.
I have tried jump starting off my new Navara truck (Frontier in the US) by running + to battery & - to ground on block but no change.
I have turned the engine over by hand with a socket & breaker bar to ensure the engine has not seized.
I appreciate any help someone may be able to offer,
