Eric, So glad to hear that they finally found it. Must have been frustrating to say they least. It's hell to see a loved one go through these things and even more so when the doctors can't find anything.

I personally went though something similar. I had come back from a equipment install in Trinidad and for 6 months had flu like symtoms and a low grade fever. The doc put me in the hospital for a week of tests. They even sent my blood to the CDC. They never found anything!!

I am gonna try.
My advice; stay outa hospitals and dr's offices, drink plenty of medicinal beverage such as JB or Captain to keep the germs away and hang with younger guys. Just saw pics in the paper down here of Bananna George footin' on the boom.....at 92.

eric; I really like Gary's advice...let'er know how much ya love her.

Eric,

Considering everything she has been through and once they get that damn thing gone, I'm betting she will outlive most of us, well maybe not JBear, but most of us, hell she already outlived Reid's hair, or most of it anyways!!

thanks again for the response, im still in disbelief tonight, i didnt know a parasite could live that long but its true, she has had a bad hacking cough for the past 5 or so years and the doctor told her the parasite was in her lungs causing that problem, she's been bag feeding for a few years now every single day a at a rough cost to the insurance company of $500.00 per bag x 365 days a year not that the amount matters but it just gives you an idea what she's been thru,I'll keep you guy's posted on her condition, she's pretty beat up from this but she is strong willed, and I'll always remember what she told me when we went on vacation with her, she told me she would be lucky if she makes it to 70, she is 66 now
Nauti, Backfoot, I feel for you guy's and am glad also that everything turned out allright

Steve;

It was the Rock. Now keep in mind that I know a lot of people that ski the Rock and never had an issue. There are numerous show teams that ski the Rock. Hell, the Show Ski Nationals has been skied on the Rock between Janesville and Loves Park, IL for years! You might not ever have an issue. I just wanted to bring it to everybody's attention.

These parasites aren't just from drinking bad water outside our borders. You can get them at your favorite ski site. It sure shocked me. Thankfully, my daughter came out of it unscathed. If there was not at least two other cases that our doctor had heard about from his associates about the same time, he could have had more misdiagnoses. He told us that unless you test specifically for the parasite, you'll never find it. All other symptoms look like the flu or a flu-like bug that just keeps coming and going.

When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.

Eric;
Sorry to hear about your mother and my prayers are out for her recovery.

For the rest of you guys, this is something that IS NOT limited to people traveling abroad. My daughter was diagnosed with an intestinal parasite just a couple years ago from skiing in a river in WI. She would get flu-like symptoms for a week and then feel OK for two weeks or so and then start all over again. Never had a chance to recover from the first bout before the next one hit. This went on for about 6 months. She was going to school at Northwestern at the time and went to the school infirmary and they just kept giving her antibiotics. Took her to our family doctor three different times during this period. He misdiagnosed it twice and finally got a proper diagnoses after she lost 20 lbs. and couldn't get out of bed for a week. She only weighed 110 lbs. to start with! Took her a full year to get back the weight and feel normal again. No doubt in my mind that it would have killed her if not properly diagnosed. For those of you who ski in mud bottom rivers, listen up!!!!!

Doctors are just like the rest of us. Mechanics can't always find the tick, plumbers can't find the leak, bridges fail, levees break. Sometimes it takes luck, or being in the right place at the right time to solve problems. I am sorry to hear how long she has suffered, but try to stay positive and hopefully she will get better.

Unbelievable!
I learned long ago that Docs ain't perfect.
We almost lost our 6 month old daughter because her original Pedi didn't diagnos a heart problem (She had been treating it as an eating disorder). Luckily, we had decided to try a new Pedi and a cancellation got us an appointment on a Friday of Labor Day weekend @ 5:00 pm (we almost blew-it off because we were heading for a NH waterski weekend! They later told us she wouldn't have made it through the weekend). The new doc had listened to her heart and had her to the ICU within the hour. Open-Heart surgery was our labor day that year. That was 14 years ago.
So sorry your Mom had that many tuff years, but hopefully things will be much better from here on!
Wishing you all the best!

Eric, Please keep us posted from time to time if you would on her improvement, and I echo the many genuine sentiments above.

On a lighter note, I personally never knew that a parasite could even live for 17+ years, but then I noticed that quinner is already 43.

Thanks guy's, she is strong and never complained about so it made you think it was no big deal which it really was, i could hear in her voice hen i spoke to her last night the relief but also the dis-appointment and grief the doctors caused, chances are she'll never be 100% but who knows, even the new doctor shook his head because he asked when this all started and she told him when she went to egypt and he about figured it out in 10 minutes, and the only reason was because Kaiser became a part of the Cleveland Clinic and allowed her to see a specialist

Eric,

My best to your family. She sounds like she's the type that hangs in there. Hopefully she will find some peace in the diagnosis and better health.

Eric,

I am so sorry to hear about the pain and anxiety your mom, and family, have had to endure.

I lost my mom about a year and a half ago - as sad as that is, the best part for me is she knew how much I loved her and how much I would miss her.

My point is spend as much time with her as you can. As tough as so many of us here are, your mom is your mom. We only have one.

I am thankful everyday that I have no regrets. We talked about everything that was important to her...

Take advantage of the fact she is still with you, she can probably still teach you a thing or two.

All my best to you and yours,

Mike

Wow I can't believe that. I feel so bad for your poor mother. It's amazing with how advanced medicine is that something can go misdiagnosed like that for so long. I hope this is the beginning of easier times for your mother.

Eric,
What a shame to hear that story. Is she (and you) happy with the new diagnosis? I'll hope for the best for her and for all your family. Perhaps there is something good in all this news.

all the best to her and you.

Damn, although considered a science, internal medicine often seems more like an art.

Terribly sorry to hear of her plight. With a few blessings, hopefully she can improve her quality of life after removing the parasite.

since this is a family oriented site I wanted to pass this little story on.
My mother travled to Egypt 17 years ago and on her return she got real sick in which if you eat the food or drink the water you usually will, she figured it would pass, well it didnt and without getting into alot of detail on how many doctors she's seen or trips to the hospital's they diagnosed her with a disease called sprue.
So over the years she went down to 98lbs. and battling this sickness (from both ends if you know what i mean) sprue is a disease in which your body is alergic to wheat products and rejects them and 90% of the things we eat have wheat in them, and over time this does damage to your digestive track unabling you to absorb any nutrician's, so now that you are basically starving to death you have to be fed intravenously with bags of liquid into a needle port that is surgically placed everyday for the rest of your life, now this creates a ton more of medical progblems such as infections and it really puts a damper on your life.
Talk about a misdiagnoses and were talking about 17 years later and alot of heart-ache, I dont know the exact details yet of how they found this out but another doctor found the real problem which has nothing to due with the previous diagnoses of sprue, they told her all these years that she caught a parasite when she went to egypt and its been with her all these years causing these digestive problems. If this was 17 days i would of never posted this. I guess the damage is done to her body and a 2 part antibiotic will get rid of the parasite.
all i got to say is...my poor mother
