Alan
Glad to hear all is going better and your daughter will be ok. Friend at work lost a niece to bacteria in her blood. Never want to see an awful thing happen near the holidays. Best wishes.

Glad to hear the good news Alan. If you have been blessed with healthy children, you tend to take things for granted. Hope everything continues to improve. Sounds like it has a great start. God's blessing to you and your family.

When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.

A quick update guys, everything is fine but we've had a tough couple of days. without getting into too much detail, Emilie showed signs of the flue last saturday but by sunday am she had taken a terrible turn and was in excruciating pain. She was taken to the ER sunday and they immediately transfered her to the Childrens Hospital in Boston and Admitted her to the ICU. Her blood pressure had dropped to 70/40 and there were signs of kidney problems. Her original prognosis had a mortality rate attached to it, 3 days later and my hands start trembling again as I recall those thoughts.

Other than diagnosing a bacterial infection in her blood stream the doctors still do not know exactly what happened. The good side is that the antibiotics did their job and she had her last of 9 IV tubes removed yesterday and is now in a regular care unit. The change from sunday to last night is incredible and she will be going home possibly even today. Doctor's say a 100% recovery with no organ damage. She's worried about getting home in time for her high school ring dance friday night. Thank god kids are so resilient.

And thanks for all the well wishes, you guys are a great bunch. The emails from the NE gang offering assistance if we needed it was heartwarming and I can't thank you all enough.

Doc, You and Karen pull strentgh from each other, any of us who've met you can see that. I commend you for your honesty not to those around you but to yourselves.

And most of all YES we have much to be thankful for in our lives. I am sitting in the Intensive care unit at Boston Children's hospital right this minute listening to my daughter snore as she is finally getting some sleep. 3 days in ICU and she gets moved to a regular room in the morning and should be home in a few days. All is well,or will be shortly, that's all I need to say but I am once again reminded of how lucky I am.

One day at a time seems to work for me lately too.

I didnt mean to bring up such a personal subject but i guess awarness is what i was lacking and didnt understand this disease completely, i always questioned my mother on how my father died (and believe me im not crying) and she said alcoholism and it was pretty much kept hidden in those days. all the excuses for black eyes and so on...
but i have to hand to you doctor and Karen, if your following the program, god bless ya cause it looks like a tough hill to conquer, and quinner i hope the best for whatever is going on with you

My Dad has had at least three friends who have died basically from alcoholism (of sorts - cirrhosis). The most recent was just last week so it's very freshly on my mind -- the other two were more like 20 and 30 years ago, but I remember them well. Very sad.

Oh, with regard to the original theme of the post, my thanks also to Pete for much expertise AND for always calling me Craig and not Kraig!

Doc,

Good for you and Karen, life is all about making wrongs right and forgiveness, sadly the individual in my life continues to be in denial and I really no longer see any hope for her until she finds it herself, I won't bore you with the gruesome details but I will say the damage has been immense.

I didn't see the show, but I had a friend drink himself to death a few years ago. He seemed to go from a casual drinker to a serious drunk in just a couple years. I couldn't believe how booze took over his life and how enebriated he was able to get on a daily basis. He got arrested one time because he was trying to get into the wrong house late at night. He couldn't figure why his ket didn't fit the door. He ended up with an enlarged heart and died. It was tragic.

it got my dad at 42, and i really never understood why until i seen that show, it was something i really never thought of until yesterday. i have very faint memories of those times. with this woman it looks like something took over and nothing else mattered except to drink and now i understand why its labeled a disease

This is an excellent winter thread. Props to HW for the excellent research and keen observation. I applaud Chuk for the funniest reply. I'm impressed by Quinner for his public confession.

I saw one of those intervention shows tonight for the first time...it was pretty gruesome.

The topic started out as being called intervention, I watched this show last night called intervention and thats what made me think of this topic...not to change it, but this normal head of the PTA at school busy body woman fell into drinking, she would polish off 4 pints of Vodka a day and for a night capper she would guzzle a 32 ounce bottle of mouthwash, her kids were included in the show and it was a gut wrencher and i thought about it all day.
did anyone else watch the show?
