Ed, Yes, you will want to see if it will hold gear lube. What you have is a surplus automotive steering column and gearbox. The seals may leak on the bottom and the one at the steering arm shaft. If they do, I'm sure they are a standard size that you can get at a bearing supply. I would fill it about 1/2 way so that the worm gear is in the gear lube. Is there any lube left in it now?

While I was working on some wiring under the dash of the 63 American Skier, I looked at the steering gear box. I noticed a large cap on the top of the box which I assume is for adding lubricant. My question what do you put in the box and how much? Would I use 80-90 or a thin grease like Lubriplate. I'm a little worried about a 44 year old gear box just leaking out and making a mess.
