When I rebuilt my 351 RR the crank had the oil groves in it. The machinist said I could use any rear seal since the shaft was groved. I did get a set of RR seals anyway just to be sure. Don't forget about the front seal, that one must be RR as there are no groves.

You can’t change the wind but you can adjust your sails

When I did mine, the machine shop ground off the grooves and put on a speedy sleeve to build it back up.I then used a rope seal and it's worked fine since.

I feel your pain Eric. I had this stout 302 short block from an older CC Mustang just sitting on a stand when a buddy and I picked up this neat old red '67 Donzi 18' with a busted engine. I was in such a hurry to see this thing run that we immediately swapped a std rot cam into the 302 and installed the engine and almost immediately started draining oil out of the bilge. But it did run good as several CCFans witnessed, but we picked up a std rot 347 stroker late summer and we've been running with that since, and which doesn't leak oil. But I KNEW that Rev Rot 302 would leak when spun std, esp without changing anything oil related. |

Did you guys make sure you put the flywheel towards the back (aft) of the boat?

Now why would he go and admit that on this website. I filed it under the "what the hell was I thinking" category, and am trying to forget about it.

Yes some cranks have a goove cut inthem to help push oil back into the motor. Reid and I found this out the hard way when we changed a motor to standard rotaion to put in a Donzi.

The boat is a 86 Silver the block s/n is a 84 casting ,heads 85. It has 270 hrs. I found a 74 block out of a truck. The mustang guys say 69-74 blocks weigh 10 lbs. more dew to more meat in the web area. I'd like to use the old reciprocating assy. with new bearings & rings D/roller T set, GT40 or P heads a new cam , al weiand intake. ReidP had a builder out of Michigan but I lost that web site anybody have it ? I'll be in Detroit for the Autorama maybe I could drop by(and pick up a short block!)

Andy, depends on the year model.
The two piece rear main uses knurlings on the crank to control the oil. The one piece uses a special seal that has the knurlings made into the seal. This type uses a "normal"crankshaft. Kinda like the front seal that you have now.The piston pins do not have an offset so they do not have to be rotated. All you have to have is a Reverse Rotation camshaft. Now is the time to build that stroker motor. there is rumors that a 351/427 stroker will be at GREEN LAKE.........Food for thought............boat dr |

351w - I'm looking for a block ,is the crank groved for the rear main seal or the seal directional? Is there a one peice r/main seal for newer blocks(reverse rotation)? The short block is still in the boat but not for long!
