Riley have you tried a heavy duty buffer and some course compound, it will burn paint right off a car if your not careful. Proly do the same for clearcoat.

My Mustang has a clear coat on the deck and the raised part of the hull. It is yellowed. If you look closely, you may be able to see it on the transom. I have cleaned and waxed the boat and from 10 feet away it looks good, but close up you can see it. It comes off by applying packing tape to it and ripping it off, but that is a slow process. I think it has actually helped preserved the gel coat, but once the boat is seaworthy, I will be trying to remove it. I was wondering if you ever ran into it and knew any tricks for removal.

BTW, the pic is from PO. It shines and looks a heck of a lot better than that since cleaning and waxing it with Collinites.

clear coating paint or gel is a completetly different monster to clear coating bare metal. And everytime you clear coat bare metal it dulls and yellows compared to the polished bare metal finish even if you use a type I class 1 anodized finish it still changes the color. You got ropes that hang off of the pylon people brushing up against it so being carefull is going to be hard.

Bruce, No but there are clear gel coats. It will add some "depth" to the look but it won't be any shinier than buffed and waxed gel. What are you thinking?? It will not cover up any problems.

I'm not here to fight with anyone.You all can what you want also.Thats what makes the world go around.I'm just giving a suggestion to what works.I've seen it and done it for years.Peter I have to disagree with,as long as you prep the pole right the clear will work on the pole.They make and engine temperature grade clear coat right out of a can.It holds up to the summer heat and keeps the pole from turning on you again.AS far as scratching it up,if your just the least bit careful you won't have that problem.

I agree with Chris with the clear coat. You can't get it clean enough for a do it your self out of a spray can. It will peel and then you will have a big mess.

They were never coated by CC. Not even a clear anodize!

there's the hard way, the lone way, the easy way and the daumb ass way, you guys choose the option that works best for you.

If you listen to my suggestion you'll be done in about 20-30 minutes or less with great results and you don't have to worry about it turning yellow, getting scratched or flaking off because you had your head up your ass and painted the f**king thing with clear coat.

And how Do I know the clear coat route isn't the way to go is because I let some dumb ass clear coat the cover plate on the bow of mine after it was polished to a mirror finished and after it was painted it looked like sh*t but then it was too late and I just lived with it. So do what you want, the hard long wrong way or the short easy right way you choose.

If the pole is prep right you won't have to worry about getting the clear coat off.Any if you did have to get it off the make products to get it off.If you look at the picture of the ski pole it is oxidized heavily.You'll be sitting there for days with the Never Dull.Thats where the polishing coumpounds come into play.I know this works because I did it to my ski pole last spring and it held up great.

larry, It looks like you have the straight pylon like I do. I did pull mine out of the boat and chucked it up in the lathe. Since it had the brush finish on it originally, I turned it slow and went at it with the belt sander. Then by hand with some finer abrasive strips. I did try some buffing but didn't like the results.

Now there's an image I didn't need. Larry sitting on the couch polishing his pylon watching men in tight pants chase each other around. Just kidding Larry. I use Never Dull also and it works wonders but if you can get that pylon out of the boat and have a buffer and some stick polish like the above post it will shine like chrome.

don't paint the pylon what ever you do you'll never get the sh*t back off.

Eagle One Never Dull is all it takes, you supply the elbow grease, use gloves unless you like black dirty hands.

I used a buffing wheel on a drill with stainless steel stick compound and some elbow grease.You can also try jewelers rouge in stick form also and that should work.After doing that take some never dull and use that for the final touch up.When your done clear it with some Krylon in a can with thin coats.It works great and it will keep your pole from tarnishing again.

Eric, thats all well and good, but once the pylon has ben skimmed he may have problems with boom or extended pylon fitment.

Larry, my pylon cleaned right up with some Blue Magic metal polish. I think its available at most auto parts stores (and maybe even Walmart).

75, try hitting it with a buffing compound and a buffer, it will definitely clean the corrosin then comeback with the metal polish, if it was perfectly straight i would tell you to ship it U.P.S to me and i could spin it on the lathe and possibly could even take a clean up cut on it, that also would be out of the kindness in my heart

There is an aluminum polish that I have seen you plug on here before, but I couldnt find the thread. My pylon is dingy and I'd like to clean it up.
