You are right that this could be easier because most people think they pay too much in taxes.
Here in California there are people that belive there is not enough taxes. If some had their way we would send in everything we made then they would send back what they thought we needed. |

Buffalo, I did. Its basically a summary of both the books. Great to email out, but if you've read the books its a little monotonous.
You're right RLS, they have and will try to pervert it to stay in power. Those in power will fight tooth and nail to keep it from being passed or get it changed so they can benefit from it, be assured of that. Thats because it will strip them of their ability to manipulate for their own personal benefit. This type of legislation will have to be forced up the gov't by its people as it's written today. No changes. History proves that when people band together for a common goal which is fair and just the gov't has no choice but to pass legislation. I honestly don't think getting this passed will be nearly as difficult as say women's right to vote was. Why? Because this is universal, its not a racial issue or a gender issue or a class issue. Power in numbers; it's the American people against the politicians and lobbyists. I think about those great people in our history that really had to fight for change, sometimes to their death. They had an opposing population, a large one. I wish I could walk into a Walmart and hand a book to every worker and family in the place. And do that at a different store every week. |

I think you miss-understand I would love a fair tax or just a sales tax but the politicians will just pervert it to stay in power. I am very conservative but only about one third of the country is conservative. One third is far left. Change occurs when that middle third gets mad or sees a need for change. When something swings the middle change occurs. You saw it happen with gun control. The far left went too far and passed gun laws the middle thought were to much. Next thing the left knows they lost a bunch of power and a change occurred. Did not help me much because here in California there are too many crazies but mayb the supreme court will help us out this month.
If tax change will come it will occur after taxes go up a bunch. Could happen soon. The problem will be will it be better. |

That is the very reason our system must change. Not little bits, a complete reform. However, you're right that it will never happen if everyone continues to take that attitude...that its impossible and THEY won't let it happen. BS!
I think you, as many others, have forgotten the enourmous pressure the citizens can put on their elected officials. The last 100yrs of this country absolutely PROVES that fact. Just look at the dramatic changes that happened when a small portion of the population banded together to fight for change....now imagine if the majority of the ENTIRE population was demanding this legislation be passed. Still don't think it would happen? Help the cause, don't spread pessimism that this country can't/won't change. Unless of course you are one of the politicians, lobbyists or IRS employees that are the only ones negatively effected by such a reform. |

If by "work" you mean what I, and most everyone else on this site, do to support the lazy, than yeah, I guess it does work.
The FairTax could be seen in my lifetime if I continue to vote for people that support it and spread the word about it. |

Greg we all have to play 9 innings. If you don't try and I don't try things will never get better. I do get fed up with politicians that can't look at both sides. Someone said we have the worst form of government except for every other one out there. Its' not pretty but it seems to work.

Roger, you seem to have a better understanding of our political system than most. I respect your opinion and agree with what you said, but I'm still gonna play 9 innings.

You have it backwards. It won't work because everyone is trying to get more and let someone else pay for it. Our representatives don't do what is best for the country but what is best for them and the people that give them money. And it is both sides. If we were to try and pass a fair tax it would not look like what anyone envisions currently. Each special interest would want their special treatment. Each year things would change and before long it would be the unfair tax. Our government works the best when both side fight to keep as much as they can. If one side gains too much power then bad things happen. That is true of both sides also. We saw what happened the first 6 years of the Busch presidency and we will see the same thing if the democrats win the presidency. Grid lock is the best you can hope for. Small changes means less corrections.
It would be great if everyone would do what is best for the greater good. It has never happened. You need to fight the big fight but hope for small changes. Large changes lead to large problems. Many are unforeseen. |

RLS, after reading that again I have to wonder if you're right. Maybe the people of this country have given up...maybe not. I saw a couple of bills get slammed recently because I, along with many others, contacted their congressmen. Don't wet your bed tonight!

RLS, if you give up before the game starts, you surely know the outcome; and the figure you gave is close but is also an average. The Fairtax works for all.

Dream on. In real life there is no such thing. There will always be a politician that will take your money so you can pay just a little less. Tax law will always be affected by politician that need to be elected. Remember that the lower 50% of tax payers pay less than 10% of the taxes paid. Why would they want to pay more.

Imagine you have lived all of your life with the FairTax in place. April 15th was just another day and there was no such thing as the IRS. You have always received a monthly check to cover the taxes due on life's neccessities which has been based on the size of your family. You have never suffered the sinking feeling of seeing an IRS letterhead in your mailbox. You have always received your full paycheck...
Gone are income taxes, corporate taxes, property taxes, death taxes, tax penalties, etc...and the $$$ spent to implement the system. Returned are the trillions that companies have taken overseas... I know this is a boat forum, but on the outside chance that this is interesting to anyone, there is a free web seminar on March the 6th. Webinar info |
