Maybe too Much Oil-- is it a problem?

Thanks for the advice guys. I am also inclined to go by volume and just add the five quarts recommended in the manual. Except that I took another look at the boat and I think perhaps I had the nose of the boat too low when I drained the oil. The oil drain hose is pretty far back toward the back of the engine, and it is actually on the side of the oil pan, and if the nose of the boat was pointed down it might not all drain out.

I might think about that a bit more, and if that is really the case then I will drain out 1/2 a quart. If not I will just leave it be.   Either way I think it will probably be ok.

I don't think that much extra oil could really cause a great problem anyway. I do recall that one time I heard that too much oil can lead to foaming if the crankshaft is in the oil. I am not sure where I heard that. But if we are at most 1/2 a quart that is not likely to be much of a problem.


And maybe next time I will put a level on the engine before I drain the oil out.

The dip stick is probably calibrated for the boat to be sitting in the water.

I changed the oil in my 89 Supra Mariah Today. It has a PCM Ford 351, with the 1.23 power plus tranny that makes the engine sit level. I changed it by running it until it was warm, and then draining the oil out the drain hose (factory one) and out the plug. I also changed the filter.

I followed the manual, and added five quarts of oil. I then ran it for a while and turned it off. A few minutes later I checked the oil and was surprised to see it well above the full line. The oil was about 3/4 inch above the full line-- about the same distance as there is between the full line and the add-one-quart line.

I checked to see how much oil came out, and it was around 4 quarts. Plus whatever came out with the filter.

That is a long story, but I am not sure what to do.

First, I have no idea if the dipstick is even that accurate. It seems like it was bent at one time. And maybe the way the boat sits on the trailer makes it read excessively high.

Second, I don't know if maybe that drain hose is located in such a place that it can't really get out all the old oil-- or maybe I should have had the boat trailer tilted up or something.

And third, I don't know if having too much oil is really a problem at all.

The only thing I do know is that I added five quarts like the manual said.

It wouldn't be that hard to drain a quart of oil out-- it is just a minor pain to run that hose out the plug hole again.

Or should I just leave it in?
