Rodger, If you get the Dee-wite, there are about 10 people listed in the ACBS directory with 16,17,18 footers. Two have the Graymarine engines. (both are 1930) I can get you email address's. I'm sure that you would be able to get pictures from them. The membership is typically very willing to help. One owner is even in one of the chapters I belong to but I don't know him.

Hi Peter
Thank you for all your thoughts, a big help have gone into it more and the best I can say is they have tried to restore, but this would need a total strip down, all new planking all round and the correct deck made, as this type of boat can only stay original, but most would be new, the makers plate has gone, and yes looks like the bottom has fiberglassed/epoxy over it,would like to have it but the cost needs to be much less, will see if the cost falls on it. Thanks again for your help on this, still looking for that old Riviera for that cost. but thats never going to happen. Roger. |

Rodger, I was just looking at the pictures again. I'm sure you noticed it but I missed it on my first look. The frame is split under the engine and has a angle iron holding it together. This is actually quite common where frames have been cut down so the engine sits as low and at the min. angle as possible. Careful selection of wood grain direction and sistering the frame are pretty much the only option.

Rodger, It would be a interesting project if you have the time and desire. It is a rare boat. There isn't much info in "The Real Runabouts" (in vol. I & V) and nothing on the model 18. Does the seller know what year it is? I would have to say from the engine stringers that it would be a late 20's early 30's, It's before the days of engine mounts when the marine engines had a continuous mounting flange cast in to the block. If you did decide to get it, I would recommend a complete disassembly. I can safely say that the bottom being a single plank it will need work. Hopefully the PO's haven't been caulking it! (or worse, fiberglassed the bottom) I also feel that the White Oak quarter sawn alternate deck planking isn't original. Someone has been customizing!! By the way, it is pronounced D-white.

Hi Peter
Thanks for the info the boat is a Model number 18. The Dee Wite is in bits as its owner has tried to restore, picture shows some work but I think it would need new decking and planking above the water line, the engine is in bits and the back main cap is broken too, he looking around $7,000 for it. Would be good to use on the Thames which is close to me as the max speed on there is 5 mph as my SN would more on tick over I hope. Roger. |

Rodger, Some of the parts can be a problem but the normal rebuild items shouldn't. Give www.graymarine.com a look. Good luck getting the boat. Do you know its condition?? Model or length? If you get it, please tell me what you are planning to do to it!!

I see there is a 1930s Dee Wite up for sale close to me, a American classic wood boat or not! and are the parts for 4 pot Gray marine hard to find.
The wood work is ok for me as I have my own shop. Roger. |
