Buffalo, this was an idea that came after the battle of the stringers, and I still wonder who won??????
The price for "GOOD WOOD" continues to escalate , and the time to fit it to the bottom was a major reason for the change in direction. An epoxy laminate of several plys would be overkill, and this topped with the alloy engine cradle would be excessive,BUT... If you look at my engine, the flooring and the rest of the work done to my old junker, I have no moderation,"ADD" combined with "OCD" means do and do it CORRECTLY. And every job that leaves my shop is done this way.................Boat dr |

Greg, Looks like you found some nice Fir. I really don't think that with todays lumber prices that $125 is that bad. Glad you didn't go with the quarter sawn as that would be overkill. I also hope you didn't get the idea of the quarter sawn from me. I only mentioned some nice straight grain Fir. It does seem a shame to cover the stuff up!!!
I forgot to mention when we were talking material and supplies, did you get one of those rollers? |

One of the long 8/4's is not for screwing up...it's for something down the road! I should also have a 7' 4/4x6 that will probably find its way into a CCFan/BuffaloBFN keepsake box. I'll dovetail the corners since you won't let me do that in the hull?!!?
So far, I have the fir and cpes on the way. I still have to get glass, epoxy, foam, filler, a case of cheap brushes, etc. I do have a roller and a few other things from the hull repair I did 2 years(maybe 3 now) ago. |

im not f-in through yet, i took a day off from the site to cool down cause boat doctor you got me so f-in pissed off and you act like nothing happened, you caused this *************** with your gossip hotline and back off like a little kid and said, I knew nothing about this... for some god damn reason your right behind me all the time riding my ass and saying im profitng from this site, well i checked the previous year i did 114 f-in borg warners and the year i was involved with CCF i did 96 that tells me i walked more guys through rebuilding thier own transmissions,
you question my f-in warranty, well here it is: ANYONE THAT SENDS ME THIER TRANSMISSION AND I REBUILD IT FOR THEM IT WILL COME WITH A LIFETIME WARRANTY FOR AS LONG AS YOU OWN YOUR BOAT Its a shame you had to pull me into this *************** and make everyone involved to look like ***************s but it seems your good at doing that dont even come back at me with some f-in smartass comment, cause the only thing i want to hear from you is an apology. and im sure you should also send Jimmy an apology cause your plan backfired on you, BTW these guy's arn't dumb either, they also can read between the lines, so do the right thing now im done |

,"well i checked the previous year i did 114 f-in borg warners and the year i was involved with CCF i did 96 that tells me "
I do not have the repeat business I once had, and it is the Boat dr's fault. "BTW these guy's arn't{aren't} dumb either, they also can read between the lines, so do the right thing" Use the spell check feature Eric, The issues were about the quality not the quantity, and they were not transmission problems.Never had any issues with you personally; "we have swapped a lot of parts and tips, spent several hours on the phone, invited you to stay at my house" As bad as you want this to be about me Eric, it is not. The members of this site are all dear friends of mine and I will do anything to help with parts, info or allowing them to use my Dealer Number.I have not gained monetarily from this site, but the friends I have made makes me very rich, very rich indeed. If I owe an apology to anyone it would be to Keith and the members of this site that I have not done enough to support . Boat dr |

Quinner- I hope you aren't talking about my comment. I was just trying to make light of this mess with your licking the bush & dirty laundry. The 2 together just didn't sound appealing to me. No scolding intended on my part. I was agreeing, back to Greg's BFN! |

I just wanted to let anyone who may also be in the hunt for douglas fir on the east coast, I found a rather large lumber yard called Sweetwater Lumber that stocks douglas fir and marine grade fir plywood.Their phone number is 770-941-4932. Hope this helps someone, took me a while to track it down for my boat.

How come each new project comes with needed tools?!!? LOL No, I don't but may have to get one. The mains are straight and have a pretty consistant angle. I'd guess they went through a table saw 20 yrs ago, and I'm having to go back to the hull with the ginding so I expect my touch with the tools will tell the tale. I may even end up with the original bed they went in plus some new mat. I pulled this off with the band saw and belt sander. I pulled the center stringer... And the bilge pump mount...and the pylon mount... I'll trim this to a rib before I glass it in. It's not original but can't hurt either. |

Me too! It had to come out because of a water pocket and other assorted nastyness was under it. As you point out, I would rather have left it alone because of how many other measurements I have based on it; but it was glassed in right next to the bilge pump mount and not sealed separately. The BPM was a glassed in square of ply that left the boat years ago and the pocket that used to house it actually sqirted when I stepped on it?!!? LOL My set up is a female socket welded to an aluminum plate, and it had a about 1" of build up under it. I'm leaving both mains until I can put it back. The plan is to use a T square I made and have marked in sharpie for the rough in and the engine cradle for the final set. As bad as I wanted to take the cradle apart and clean it, something told me to let it be for now. Chris, I appreciate your concern! Earlier is better than later if anyone sees me do something stupid! LOL |

Greg, Have you tried an air operated die grinder, with the carbide debur bits fitted for your prep work? no more dust (almost) leaves the area perfect for reglassing no more replacing grinding pads http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/cp872.html www.msdiscount.com/columnar.aspx?cat_id=1537&session_id=534499367&category_ site=STARTOOL |

Thanks for the tip 91, I haven't used those but do have a grinder. What size do you like? I've been mostly using an electric grinder with a few different blades...plenty of dust!

Just the small one-as in the link I put up,it cleans up the work area very fast, and it gets into the tight areas better. The glass comes off in small chunks so wear complete eye cover-once youv'e tried it, you probably won't pick up that grinder again! We have done it with a hose attached to the grinder spraying a fine mist of water= zero dust and no itchies. You will need to acetone down the raw glass after wetting it though. |

I am in the process of finishing by stringer/rotted wood/nasty old wet smelly things gutting. My 68 mustang will soon be a shell of her prior self.
Nothing at all in her but a clean blank canvas fiberglass floor. Where do I start and how do I get the boat flex out. It is soon going on a level sawhorse stand. Thanks gary |

Gary, Hopefully you took some measurements of the old stringer before ripping the old ones out. As far as getting the hull into it's correct shape, get it off the trailer if you have it on the trailer. The trailer bunks put more pressure on the hull near the engine because that's where the majority of the weight is. Several people (including Greg above) have built stands to prop up the hull. I find that if you support the two rear corners near the transom and then the keel about 2/3rds forward that the hull will be the proper shape. Level the gunnels and check the floor for level. |

This is crude but worked pretty well. The strip of ply above the jig is another piece I've used to 'keep things straight'. The trailer is loose below the boat, and I'm happy to say everything is good to go. It took me a while to figure out how to set it right, but even the 2x4 in the 2nd pic is level. The bulkheads are still tall on top.

Greg!! I knew you were going to go excessive with your woodworking skills. The bulkhead scribing down into the lifting strake V notches??
Meaning of anal Common usage: "Conversationally, the term is often used to describe a person deemed to be overly obsessed with minor details. Its roots are said to be from Sigmund Freud. The term is often used in a derogatory sense to describe a person with such attention to detail that the obsession becomes an annoyance to others, and can be carried out to the detriment of the so-called anal-retentive person." Guess what? I probably would have done it the same way!! Looking good. Have you been on vacation or something? Lately, I miss my morning pumpkin patch updates. |
