Maine Vacation

In Maine you can have the beach along the southern coastal area, quaint little fishing and tourist towns in the Downeast area, and beautiful lakes inland. Are you bringing a boat?

We won't be bringing the boat on this trip. We want to check out some of the quaint fishing towns, etc. & great scenery in the area. My daughter has found Barharbor, Calais, & Eastport. Any one better than the other?

I've never been to these places but, Bar Harbor is a major destination with Arcadia National Park. People come to Maine just to go there. It takes a couple of days to take the place in. Calais and Eastport maybe worth seeing if your in the area, but I don't think I'd make them the point of your trip. Nice towns to see on the way to Bar Harbor if you drive up Route 1 is Camden and Rock Port. Also Boothbay Harbor. Route 1 is a nice ride, but has a ton of traffic in summer. I'm a lake person, so I have limited experience recreating along the coast.

Sebago Lake/Lakes Region is a nice area if you go inland. That's where I go.

What part of the sumer are you planning?

    Forgot to mention,my buddy's parents own a bed & breakfast in Kittery if you're in that area.World famous Outlet shopping for the girls and we could grab a few beers.There are also beaches nearby and Kittery and York are both historic fishing towns(not as much charm as the downeast places,though)It's only ten minutes from my house.I can get the info if you'd like.

Thanks guys for the info. My daughter & wife are checking out things on the internet & will definately look at the areas mentioned. Not sure of the dates yet, but when things are finalized I will let you know. It would be great to hook up for a beer or 2.

There is some great hiking in the New England area as well. NH's White Mountains are spectacular. I'm not as familliar with the ME peaks, but sure they are great too.

I've only really been to Acadia, ME. We make an annual trek there in the fall over Columbus Day weekend. It is an amazing place with lots of things to do. The hikes are great and have beautiful ocean views. There is biking, beaches and Bar Harbor for shopping/ restaraunts, etc.

There is a good reason they call Maine Vacationland.

Mike- I am from Atlanta, traffic can't be any worse than here. At least there would be something to look at while you sit in traffic!

That's because the others are fictional from Steven Kings twisted mind. I enjoy reading his novels because most are placed in Maine and being a New Englander I pick up so many nuances that an Outsider may not.

PS. My comment about going back in time was a compliment to the area. Block out what the tourist trade has probably done to the area and enjoy the natural scenery and history of the area. If you get a chance take a ferry ride or whale watching tour and look at that coast from the water, it's breathtaking.

Jbear- Do you know when you are going over to Reids? I am assuming it is at the front or end of your Norris trip. I am sure we can hook up somewhere.

cat; Its gonna be the backend of the trip again. That seems to work pretty good. It was awesome last year...hope we can have just as good a time this year. You and Tom are gonna do Green Lake right? That will be just a couple weeks before Reid's....hope ya can do both. How about Mrs. skicat?

Hey Greg,

Kennebunkport is a popular tourist destination. My family has lived in Kennebunkport for 40 years now. My grandparents have both passed away, but my aunt still lives there.

- The port is great for shopping and site seeing. Plan on parking and walking, it is a lot easier than trying to move the car around the port.
- The port is very picturesque so bring your camera.
- If you like beer check out the Kennebunkport Brewery.
- Take the trolley tour. (This is a bus that looks like a trolley car.) It is pretty reasonably priced and it will take you around town. You�ll learn a few historical things about the town and get to see the sites. (This is good after you�ve walked the port for a while and want to give your feet a rest.)
- If it interests you, you can take a scenic boat tour and/or a whale watch out of the port.
- After shopping in the port you could take your car down Ocean Avenue. Ocean Ave. runs parallel to the port, out to the coast. (This is also the road you�d take to get to the Bush�s place.) Just after the port, before Ocean Ave. bears to the left and continues along the coast, there is a large white hotel on your left - The Colony Hotel, I believe. Watch for the entrance to a parking area on the right. You can park there and walk out on a jetty and watch some of the boats going in and out of the port.

Those are some ideas� I�m sure you can get some others from the town�s website.

    All kinds of stuff to do.Acadia National Park,there's a small railway museum in Boothbay you could kill an hour or two at.They also have a big building that usually has a lot of antique cars and stuff on loan,but sometimes it isn't open.Kennebunkport.....let's see....you could cruise by Walker Point and wave to Pres.Bush if he's in town,but your time may be better spent tossing a brew back at Federal Jacks or if you like motorcycles you could hit Bentley's Saloon in Arundel(not a place for kids!) usually 2-300 bikes on a hot summer night.Your only about 1\2 hour from where I live when in K-Bunkport.Shoot me an Email a week or so ahead and we could meet up if our schedules work out .I most likely will be in Boothbay Harbor during the 3rd weekend in July,Looks like I'll just miss you up there.
