Wondering what you all recommend for keeping the brown stains off the hull. I just bought an 04' 196 and want to baby this baby. I really don't think I can afford $2500 for a lift, although I really want one.
I usually use On Off but hate using it because of its properties. Waxing before each year used to work on the old 81'. It seems to be getting harder to get off though. Last year I pulled it power washed it and used On off but the brown stains are still there. Anyway wondering if you guys have better success. I am on a man made lake that has a mud bottom so in the summer the water is very brown. |

I'm not big on hull cleaners, but I've heard people are happy with slimey grimey as well as on/off.
A good quality cleaner wax and a bunch of rags will take care of it too. -Brad |

Pete - Will leaving a boat in the water long-term still cause blistering? It would be a shame to see that happen to a '04. Should he paint the bottom? Maybe $2500 for a lift is actually a bargain!

The lift is a bargain! Advances have been made to prevent blistering but it is still a problem. It's the reason you will see any larger boat that sits in the water even come from the factory with bottom paint. A good bottom paint will also include a epoxy barrier coat/primer.

Wow, I havent found anything that On/Off wont take off... including paint! That stuff is pretty serious, even diluted. If its still in the gel after that, Id say a cleaner wax would be a minimum- but more likely sanding/compounding would be needed.
On a nice new '04, Id try like hell to find a cheap lift for it rather than keep it in the water. |

I bought an 81' about 6 years ago with the idea of restoring it to like new. A 2 year old and one on the way has taken all my time and I finally decided I would never get around to fixing it. After lots and lots of pleading my wife allowed me to get my 2004' 196, a dream come true. This is my perfect boat it has everything I would have wanted and NOT wanted. This will be our boat for life. It is in mint condition with a brand new trailer as the owner kept it at a marina on a lift. I have found a company that sells the free standing lifts for $2500. I think it is time for more pleading.  I really don't want blisters like my 81' and Hobie cat have. We live on a lake so they sit in the water for about 5 months/year.
I think I can get about 2K for the 81' so that will pay for most of the lift. Thanks for the feedback and you guys are right, this should be on a lift. |

have any of you guy's tried any of these inflatable lifts? just curious for some feedback on them, I know a guy who kept his Fountain on them and swore by them, it seems like it would be a cheaper route

I totally forgot abotu Star-Brite. My neighbor told me about it last year. He loved it. Still won't help with blisters though. Talking myself into a lift here. lol

Here you go phospher. 2004' 196SE Excalibur 390hp w/400hrs. It has PP, composite swim deck, cover, bimini top, and brand new trailer. I wanted it stripped to save money. The only thing I really wanted was PP. When my son gets older and starts wakeboarding I will install a hydrogate. I am a hardcore slalom skier and I have been dreaming about this wake ever since I heard about the new hull design.
Below is old 81', Ford 351 w/10026hrs. IT is really not a bad boat it just needs some TLC. New upholstery, paint the trailer and replace part of the floor section. I have been slowly fixing things teh last few years like starter, alternator, electronic ignition but now it is time for more. I will be sad to see it go.

Actually it runs fine, since I bought it about 5 years ago. Last year was its best year when I installed the electronic ignition. LAst time it ran was when I pulled it late october. It looks a bit bad for 2 reasons.
1. I power washed it once and that took off alot of paint. 2. It sat covered 2 winters ago and got kind of moldy and that black stuff grew that comes from the gasoline. It ran fine last year. We put on about 50 hours/yr. No real headaches. I would love to fix it up but just don't have the time. IT goes on Ebay next week. I am hoping it will cover the new lift I am most likely going to get. |

I've heard a 50/50 mixture of Lysol toilet cleaner and hydrogen proroxide will remove all stains and not harm the gel.

Supposedly it is all yellow. I have talked to the dealer in length over this and he says it is in fact yellow. I really don't care since it it an almost new SN and I got a really great price. Just no purple or pink and I am happy.
@brainard- the center section over the tranny needs it most. the other section under the observer seat is also needing it. But I hear what you are saying and this is why I know I don't have the time this boat really needs. Two kids = never done.

Well I just happened to break down at an airport about 2 hours away from my new boat. I got a car and ran over. It looks brand new accept for the hour meter. Absolutley perfect. It is all the same color Maddmarxx. It appears orange in the pic but it actually that dark yellow you see on hummers. Very nice looking color. Can't wait till next week. It feels like Christmas and I am 10 years old.

TK, as much as I love the 81 I think after one pull behind your new ride the old boat will be a distant memory. Great looking boat and please buy that lift, be a shame to see the new one get buggered up like the 81.

I agree 81. I have acquired a lift. I am just waiting to see if the one on Ebay goes or not and if I can handle the 14 hour drive to go pick it up. After seeing it yesterday this bad boy is living on a lift.
And yes I am sure the 81' will fade after the first pull. After doing some boat dealer, lot driving yesterday  I already am forgetting about the old 81'
