I have a loud clicking noise coming from the front of the engine. It gets louder with acceleration. Sounds like it coming from the water pump or the timing chain.
Anyone experience this? Thanks. |

Need to eliminate things to narrow down the list. If it clicks while at idle, crank it with water supplied to get things lubricated. Then remove the belt from the water pump and crank it again. If the clicking is gone, it is the RWP. If not you eliminated the RWP and may need to get a stephscope (sp) to narrow down the area. Could be a valve, cam, or bearing if it sounds metalic.

Not having much luck with this boat lately!!
Remove belts from alternator & RWP to verify the bearings are OK in them. If you still have clicking noise it may be lifter or valve gear, or though it is better described as a ticking noise. If the noise is more metallic & deeper check oil pressure. Is it the same as normal? Things starts to get expensive from here. |

Try using a long screw driver (handle to your ear tip end touching the engine ) to find the noise. - It works !

Took the water pump off, it's definitely the cause of the noise. I can't tell if it's something inside the pump or the connection between the pump and engine.
My pump is mounted to the front of the engine. Should there be some kind of bushing between the pump and the engine or is it just metal to metal contact. The teeth on both ends look a bit worn. I wonder if that's the cause for the noise. I'll post a pic later of the worn teeth.

Here's a pick of the worn pieces. Not exactly sure the technical name for them. Is this wear normal? Might the sound be coming from here? I guess it's that or the pump bearing. Any thoughts?

David, You're missing the insert between the coupling halves. Take the coupling into a bearing supply or even a WW Grainger and see if you can match it up. It looks like a standard "Lovejoy" will work. The wear on the couplings should be OK.

David,here is the part your missing,the black rubber part.I had problems with the pump shaft being worn,which would the let the coupler move,tearing up the keyway in the soft aluminum as you can see in the picture. Ended up getting a new shaft and having a machine shop machine a Lovejoy coupling to fit.If you can't find the rubber insert,you can have my old one for the shipping.It does have a crack in it but should work for awhile

Good to know! I thought something was fishy with that metal on metal contact. Should be an easy fix. Glad it's nothing more significant.
Thanks for the offer Gary! Lovejoy's website shows several places around here that carries their product so I'm sure I can find something. I'll let you know if not. David, It may not be a Lovejoy brand and the reason I suggested taking it in for a match. Dodge, Browning, Martin are other possibilities. The inserts aren't completely interchangable between all the brands. The inserts are also available in 3 materials. The standard neoprene is fine just incase it comes up.
