Well it was originally, (of course) but was looking a little raggedy.
When considering repainting I considered original, but then decided to go with the period muscle car engine look. |

A red OMC?? It should be that aqua color in 75 then around 77 OMC went to the off white! |

I am going to run it on the stand. I've never had it running before so I want to make sure it's ok before I install it, and Eric rebuilt the tranny and it may need an adjustment which is impossible to make once the engine is in the boat.

Thanks for the pics of the mount. That is exactly how Boat Dr explained it to me on the phone. Thanks Billy. Are you planning on running your motor on that stand before installing ? I am thinking about building a stand like that for mine and will run it before installing. |

Pete, thanks for the number. I went by the cap, which looked like some of the pics I'd seen, but it's way too blue, Chrysler Blue actually. I'm going to give it 2 more coats, so I'll get it a better color.

Bruce, The pylon mount looks like a dealer install but who knows!!
The engine is looking good but what happened to the paint color. I though we had it nailed down to GM blue being the closest. Here's the Dupli-color chip DE 1608 
Well at lest it is a Ford color and not the red-orange of that other brand!!! |

Definately crude. I'm guessing it's original.
Put the 1st coat of paint on my engine today, not the color I wanted, but it's all prepped and ready for a few more coats.

The 60's era pylons did not have a plate at the floor level. They simply went through a hole in the floor (double layer) and then to the bracket at the keel. Unless the boat was ordered with it or had the ski package it wasn't standard equipment. I installed probably 4 or 5 way back working at Watercraft Sales. If lucky, the hole was already in the floor with the vinyl flooring (commercial wall covering) and the bracket was glassed into the keel. I don't believe that the keel bracket was screwed into wood, just glassed in. The connection between the keel bracket and the pylon as a bolt through cross drilled holes.

My '69 Barracuda pole isn't original, but I just ripped it out, and I can tell you how it was done, which was poorly.
Glassed into the bottom of the boat is a metal stub a couple of inches long. My pole was a 2 x 2 steel pole that fit over that stub. At floor height, the PO welded a 1/4 metal plate onto the pole. The pole passes through that plate to the stub at the bottom. The plate is about 10-12" square. I didn't measure. At the front of the plate are two bolt holes, one on each side, that go down through the floor. Those 2 bolts fastened a 1/2" thick, 2" wide, 1' long (again, estimates) piece of bar stock to the bottom side of the floor. The floor in that area was 2 sheets of plywood. I actually think one of those sheets was chipboard, which eventually failed, and is why my pole has been flapping in the breeze the past couple of summers. The top of the pole cleared the engine cover about 6". I could go back and get accurate measurements if you like, but I'm thinking this is sufficient for your purposes. Thomas |

Thanks Bruce. That would give me an idea of the mount size and height. With the hull clean, I can use your picture to see the area and how high out of the V of the hull. The one I removed was so poorly done that it blocked water from running back to the bilge. This would allow for standing water under the console that could not escape.

I'll take a pic of the mount in my Mustang tomorrow and post it on Sunday. I assume it's original. All you'll see though is the metal receiver end sticking up through fiberglass matting.

Does anyone have a picture of the mount for there Pylon base in a 60s Barracuda that they can post ?
PO re-mounted the base for the Pylon but did a really bad job. Used Fiberglass over Teak which is also not a good idea. I have removed the base and mount and would like to make the correct wood base for the era. Like Greg did, but he had the old one to model from. Thanks... |
