I like to have a battery disconnect switch on all my boats, that may be something you can look into. Very easy to install

Don't forget the radio preset memory draws current. Is the battery the original one? Does it sit unused all winter?

If youre familiar on how to use a current meter on a multimeter that would be the best way like David F posted. With everything off, better read 15 milliamps or less (.015 amps) or you will have draining problems. Checking current with a test light is nearly impossible unless whatever it is is drawing quite a bit (is possible). A REAL SMALL 12 volt bulb is better than a large one to test. Pull a battery cable and put bulb in series with it. This is still a tough way to test!!

Using a multimeter or test lamp to read current draw at the battery, start disconnection accessories and the like one at a time until the current draw is eliminated. Once you find the culprit, repair or replace.
I would look for: 1) Faulty bilge pump or auto/float switch. 2) Faulty circuit breaker or switch. 3) Shorted electrical wires. |

hey eveyone I need help!!! I have a 99 super sport nautique and I have a strange battery drain. If my boat sits for a couple of days the battery will drain down to low to crank the motor. I have checked the battery and it is good, and I have new battery cables. My friend suggested it may be the aftermarket amp I installed, so I installed a switch to kill all power to the amp and that did not work. When I run the boat the amp meter always reads 13 0r 14 so I do not think it is the alternator. If anyone has any idea I would appreciate it. THANKS
