Now you see it:

Now you don't:

I just have to trim the edges down, and cut out the battery box cover.

have you test fitted the motor box since you did the exhaust? it just looks a little wide to me where the hose enters the floor.

Nope. Will do this week. It should not be an issue as the exhaust is exactly where it was before. The only wider part could be the hose thickness and the clamp nuts, and I can spin them around.

I got my battery box cut out and am super happy with it.

I started trimming the carpet edges to see if I could get it tight enough to not need the trim edging. Well, as I completely suck at finish work, I will be using the balck trim edges. Most of it turned out good, but a couple spots I got careless or ahead of myself or whatever, will require a little hiding. Ornery.....

more this week. I want this thing done and out of my shop.

I am planning on laying in the carpet edge trim tonight. It is, I believe, extruded rubber, correct me if I am wrong. Due to my poor cutting on the edge in a couple little, but pretty obvious spots, I have to use this. I do not really want to use the carpet adhesive I have as it is messy putting in down, and I did not leave a lot of room to work with on the edge. Perhaps 2 inches at best in a few places. I want to use something as an adhesive in a caulking tube so I minimize overapplying the glue, and it is easier to get down in there. Any suggestions on what to use that would be convenient to get at a HD, or Lowes ?

thanks

I've heard that some home centers do carry 5200 or 4200 (fast cure). If not, then I'd look for a polyurethane adhesive in a caulking tube such as Franklin #4222 premium poly construction adhesive.

Thanks Pete
Yeah, I do not want to wait for the 5200 to cure. That stuff was still gooey 10-12 days after I did my crossmembers, and motor mount backing plates with it.
How does the 4200 compare with cure times?
I was thinking construction adhesive too. I have a tube of some Liquid Nails but says to not use on plastic nor vinyl. It would probably be ok, but would like to be sure.

no no no don't do that if it says to not use it on plastic or vinyl then it's going to melt the trim during the exothremic reaction as it cures.

Go to Lowes, Home depot and get some clear sealent in the chaulk section it will dry over night and sticks to about anything.

Thank you, Chris.

non-silicone though, I presume? I hate using that crap. It doesn't stick worth a crap to anything.

The carpet is rubber backed, but will only get a little adhesive to it, the last inch inch is the plastic trim. This is being glued to my epoxied plywood.

Chris, We are not talking about high temps here caused by a exothermic reaction with the poly adhesives. Remember these are single compomponent moisture cures and do not develope the heat like a two component and even then, heat is disipated when the two components are spread out in thin films.

I do agree that some construction adhesives contain solvents that may harm some plastic types.

Here's the product description for the Franklin 4222:

"Construction Adhesive Polyurethane Size Ozs.=29
Provides strength and durability. Non-flammable, non-toxic. Provides a strong bond to common building materials, including wet, frozen and treated lumber. Safe for plastic or foam. For use with non-porous substrates. Exceeds the requirements of APA`s AFG- 01, ASTM D3498, AND ASTM C557. 1/8`` Bead covers 355 ft, 1/4`` bead covers 89 ft. and 3/8`` bead covers 39 ft. 1 hour working time depending on humidity."

If it's safe for foams, it's certainly not going to harm the trim.

I used 5200...mostly because I had some and it was on sunday. It hasn't budged; even when I was 'practicing' engine R&R?!!?   LOL

If I can find the fast cure 5200, I think I am going to use that. If not, I am going to use 4200, I know i can locate that.
This is all part of a workaround due to inexperience, recklessness, and impatience...

thanks guys.

I did end up getting the fast cure 5200. Getting the trim edge onto the carpet was pretty challenging. As I mentioned I did not leave much unglued around the edges. 1.5 to 2 inches. Do not do this. Leave more, if you are using the edging. I had to slide the trim on from the front and work it all the way down 11 feet. This sucked. The starboard side turned out fanastic. The port side turned out really good with the exception that I was using a hairdryer to warm the trim to make it easier to slide and to get some of the bends out of it from being shipped here. For some reason (read: idiocy) it got too hot in one spot and melted a small spot in the carpet. I somehow managed to not throw every freaking tool in the shop through the wall. There is still a blue cloud floating around in the shop. I am really bummed, but it is not that big that I am going to rip out the entire carpet and re-do it. I used the hairdryer instead of a heat gun for this very reason. It is what it is and I cannot do much about it. I used this method on the starboard side with no ill effects. I really do not get it. Anyway. It looks great and I will post pics today. I put in the rear seat and, yes Chris, the motor box fits fine. I have to admit for a second, even though I knew it was not an issue, your post came to mind as me and my neighbor were dropping it over the motor. Putting seats in today, a little more wiring, the kickboard and I am done. Then, for my last act of rocking the new CC pennant.

I can't wait to see those showroom style pics. Remember also to post some with your work on the water. Make sure you are on board as i would like to see the size of the smile on your face.

The water is a little thick still. Guessing we still have 24 inches of ice out there. As we are at -11*F (-23*C.) this morning, we are probably not losing any ice today...
There will be big smiley pics on the water in a couple months, but of Barbara, not me. It is her Ponyboat. And she is way better looking than I.

Honesty...excellent. I seriously can't imagine -24C. I'm not well travelled out of Africa where temps tend to be warm. Is Barbara cheering you on while the project is underway? I'm trying to convince Mrs Naut that she needs one of her own as inspired by you and Boat dr and your arrangements with your ladies. She hasn't taken the bait yet.

I'm sure you could find rubber seals that would be flexible enough to form around the opening and clamp over the entry area. I hope you get my idea....sort of like the seals that you finad on vehicles that seal the door and body on a car or the window to the door frame? Perhaps abit thicker with a wider bead.

JD, I bought a 30x6 roll of 20oz.

carpet link

You will have to dig around on there to find the 6 foot wide stuff.

The longer piece enabled me to have enough for the sides, rear panel, kick board, entire floor, and a bunch left to re-cover dock bumpers and such. I really like their adhesive too, that stuff is STUCK on the floor and never coming up.

I think I will be done with her today !!!!!!

few pics from the second to the last day of the project.

carpet trimmed out

replaced ammeter with voltage gauge, and replaced temp gauge with a matching one.

Has anyone ever used on of these safety wire tools? Seriously cool. My brother has got a tool collection that you would not believe and he whips out some pretty interesting stuff.

I added a Blue Sea fuse panel behind the dash. My wiring is pretty much a huge wad of spaghetti back there, so Joe started cleaning it up. We have a ways to go to get it completely done but got a good start. Can finish that later this Spring.

Later today, I am puttin' up a flag !!

I was wondering if your motor box would clear the exhaust, i was baffled when i seen the exhaust going outboard and i thought it was something you were doing on your own,
heck with all those other pics, the last one is all i need to see, should put the collar a little closer to the stuffing box though....always a critic in the bunch. nice work throughout.....in your case only 6 more months till summer lol

Eric, you know, I could not recall exactly where the collar was before. It seemed as though there was a set hole for the screw where it is. You want it closer to the stuffing box as opposed to the coupler because it is keeping the shaft in the boat, correct?

yeah, its so the prop doesnt hit the rudder or to the likes of hitting the hull if the shaft slides out or your coupling bolts come loose. i usually set them a 1/4' inch or so from the box

Thanks guys.

The alignment is good as it sits. The largest gap was in between .001 & .002. I could not get the .002 in there. I feel it is really good. While I did not check it before removing the engine, it appears as good or better than before. Turns nice and smooth. I will check it again after the dust settles and the boat has had a couple runs on the lake.

It had better not be 6 months yet, but the thermometer makes you wonder...

Eric, while I have not kept track of my beer count as accurately as my hours, I would be willing to bet I am within 24 of your estimate. Funny s***. The day is young !
