I recently purchased a new Faria speedo and pitot along with 25 feet of air hose from Discount Inboard Marine. I installed the new gauge and pitot with no trouble. I pulled the rear seat when I was running the hose from the dash down the gunnel to the transom. I keep my fuel tank full and I really did not want to have to drain the thing to pull it. In looking closely over the top of the tank, I can see where the original air line attaches to a nipple on the end of a gold colored tube which points down to where the original air line goes thru the transom to the pitot. What I did for now was remove the old air line at the connection to this gold tube and pushed the end of the new air line onto the nipple of said gold tube. Can anyone tell me if this (in theory) will work the new Faria speedo OR do I need to pull the tank and bypass the gold tube, connecting directly to the new pitot?

As far as I know the gold tube is for dampening purposes. It just increases the volume of air in the line so minor spikes of air preassure won't cause the speedos to oscillate. Based on that I think you did it correct. Therefore it should help to have the dampening tube in line. You can always confirm this with SkiDimm.

I have a question to add. I recently replaced the orignal Teleflex speedo on my '76 Southwind. It does not have the pitot on the transom. Instead, it has a little shark fin shaped unit under the boat right in the middle. All I did was connect the existing air tube to the back of the new Teleflex speedo. The tubing from the bottom of the boat to the behind the dash looks and feels like copper tubing until it changes to plastic. Test run seemed to work fine. Question: Any reason why this is not OK if it works. I really don't want to add the pitot and tube on the exterior of the transom for aesthetic reasons.

Kirk,

You are good to go. My skier has the same setup as yours.

The po of my boat put one on the stern bypassing the "fin".I pulled it all off and reconnected the fin, works great.I think the new way is cheaper and easier to unclog, but I didn't like all the hardware on the back either.
