How many thousenths is acceptable on a bent shaft before it is scrap? Does it have to be completly straight. Would you say 22 thou is acceptable at the end of the shaft. Can this be straightend out or should I buy new ?

Thanks

Pat,
22 is pretty bad!! New ground round stock for shafting tolerance max's out at .002" in 24".

Are you measuring on the boat or in V blocks? On the prop taper? Not that it really matters as you'll get the same ether way.

Yes shafts can be straightened but if bent at or just aft of the strut it's a bad spot. Lots of stress right there. Also it's been bent once now it needs to be bent back straight and it will be weaker. No guarantees from the machine shop!!

Pat,
Sure sounds like the prop took a hit at one time with the bend at the strut. Why don't you take it to work with you one day. You guys must have a press down there. See what happens. All you have to loose is the PITA job of putting it in and taking it out!!

Is that all they do to make it straight . Just use a press to bend it back? I kind of thought their was something a little more difficult than that . So how many thou is acceptable ? Pete , in your first post you said 2 thou tollerance on mill specs . Would that be what I need to shoot for ?

Pat,
The worst bend is at the strut. If .002" in 24" is the norm, you can appreciate what .022" in about 4" is. Concentrate there as the .008" in the middle may just be the result of the bend near the strut. It's going to be lots of "trial and error" work in the press. You will get spring back so the shaft needs to be over bent. Even the pros who straighten shafts don't really know how much to give it. Have your V block/indicator set up next to the press and take it slow. Locate the high spot with the dial, mark it and press there. If I remember correctly, the .002 tolerance is the max anywhere between 24" centers. Place the shaft in the V block with 12" of the tapered end sticking out from the V block and measure on the taper like you already did. Shoot for the .002"

Thanks Pete I think I will give it a try. I have a machine shop guy that may be willing to help . Should I try to straighten the bend after the strut first ?

Pat,
Yes, I'd go after the bend at the strut first because the .008 in the middle may be coming from that bend too.

Yes I bent it a couple of years ago . It always irritated me .But I never fixed it .I just ran the engine slower so it wouldnt vibrate as much . I think I will be ok now .

Well nows the time to do it Pat.I have been in the garage the last couple of weeks getting mine ready, still got a few things more to go.One of which is checking my shaft. My strut was bent at one time and I never checked my rudder. It looks a little off and it figures I can't get the press at work to work right. It seems when it's cold it don't work right, maybe by the end of the week it will.
