Wooden boats have a way of separating an owner from both his time and his money.
I ran into the same problem looking for the OEM brackets for the Dart.Those that were correct and those that were CHEAP.
They never seem to be both.I am trying to find a middle ground as to "MY" resto.Pete has been a guide as to what is acceptable and what is "PERIOD CORRECT"
As it stands now , I have as much money in the parts and pieces as I have in the purchase price for the "ENTIRE BOAT"

Pete, what do you make of the hull damage on this one? Based on what you can see, what would you do to repair that properly?

Billy's correct that there is rot and delamination involved. The rot usually starts when there is some delamination and then the water gets in there keeping the wood wet.

I'm surprised that area was missed when the bottom work was done. Maybe he gave up after doing the bottom. The hull sides being bright takes the woodwrker into a higher level of skill!! It's quite possible that the bad area might have just been a filler type patch and paint job. Billy sure can confirm that that method doesn't work. Ralphs and Walts decision to send the Dart to the CC factory for a "restoration" was a big mistake. I think the factory handed the guy who sweeps the floors a can of Marinetex, a can of paint and a brush! BTW, Marinetex is not a good product to use on wood. In fact, I question it's use on anything!!

Getting back to the repair on the Compact, the bad section of ply needs to be replaced with wood. The problem with this is where do you start and stop. The damage goes up into the bright area of the hull. A sectional patch will always be very noticeable even done by the very best woodworker. The original hull ply was scarfed making any seams as close to unnoticeable as possible. It's close to impossible to scarf joint in the middle of a piece of plywood. Then there's the other problem with patching whether it's done with butt blocking or scarfing. Any means of glueing (epoxy) will seal the edges of the patch preventing any stain from "taking" in the sealed area. The patch as well as the old ply must be pre finished to the point where any epoxy that come out of the joint can be wiped off before it cures. If the area was just below the waterline then of course the patch could be faired and the bottom repainted. Now, if there's one bad area, are there more? A hull inspection would be needed.

The proper way? Complete hull side replacement!

Wow, your Atom must have been built in a different factory!! No offence, but my experience with other wood boats and the craftmanship in them I've got a different opinion. One thing however is I've had the oportunity to have a CC hull completely apart so I've been into one "deeper" than I believe you have. Lots of "dumb-dumb" which is a derogatory term used for fillers or putty. Screws driven through the ply competely missing frames and then left there to become a leak. Axes used on frames for engine or shift linkage clearance!!
