Im about to start restoring a 1978 ski tique. I work with fiberglass and gel-coat everyday, so i have had my fair share of fiberglass and gel-coat repairs.. but i was told about an antifouling bottom boat paint but know nothing about it..So dose anybody know if it will blister or flake off...? I could just paint the boat with gel-coat(which would be the best) but with gel-coat being so thick i can only reduce so much.. which would mean that i would have to wet sand and buff the intire boat which im trying to advoid...much help is needed... thanks

What's the condition of the bottom now? What are you trying to cover up? Blistering? Anti fouling would be the very last thing I would put on a glass hull used on inland lakes. What's the matter with gel? Even reduced you would need to wet sand out the orange peel. No, bottom paint will not peel off if the prep is correct. What type of glass work are you involved in? I'd also like to add that anti fouling paint on a Tique bottom is NOT a restoration. It didn't come from the factory with it painted!!!! Use the word "restoration" very carefully! |

Well thanks pete,the bottom of the boat is in good shape a few deep scrachs and and small amount of glass needs repair,but that is not the major problem.. but the fact is that the boat was spray painted by my father 2years ago and just looks like crap..im redoing the boat as a gift for the family, so i really want to do a good job..i think i might just re gel-coat the boat...it will take me a bit longer but,this way in know it will turn out the way i want it to..just wondering why not antifouling paint for inland lake boats..? Pete you are right about useing the word RESORATION carefully... Thanks

I should have elaborated regarding anti fouling for glass boats on inland lakes and added "small" boats. In 99% of the cases they are trailered, kept on lifts or hung in boat houses. They don't sit in the water long enough it have bottom growth problems. Adding bottom paint is just adding to the boats maintenance. The anti will look good for a couple of seasons and then it's time to paint again. This is especially true with the ablative paints because the top surface washes off leaving a "blotchy" appearance. Then after multiple coats it has to be stripped. Not fun! I just went through the process on one of my woods. Every time I work on a bottom I always keep telling myself it would have been easier to pull the engine/fuel tank and flip the hull!!! How about some pictures of your project? used to leave mine in the water all of the time without a lift or bottom paint, I stopped waxing below the water line and scrubbed the hull each time I was out and it never really built up any slime or algee, then come fall washed it down with acid and then rinsed with water really good looked good as new ready for next season.

These boats typically have thick gel. Have you tried wet sanding a small area to see what's what? Spray paint should come right off.
