Bruce,
Where are you hearing that the 256 is unknown and unwanted? The first Y block was even smaller at 239 cubes. Have you ever seen the Y block history in cars/trucks? Just because the Y was used mostly in the Mercs it's still a Ford.

Ford Y block

My manual only shows 2 versions of the 256. I'll look for those casting numbers. The engine is original and complete, except for the fuel pump. If it's a 272, it's got some value. The 256 is practically unknown and unwanted. It wasn't even a Ford engine, it was a Merc.

I've been reading "Parting The Waters" which is a book Ralph Meloon gave all of us at the LG breakfast. It talks about Correct Craft having always been inovative and quality minded, so I don't know why their quality wouldn't have been up there with Century. The use of plywood may have been more for performace than to cut costs? I'm not a carpenter, but this Atom appears well built to me.

Bruce,
In the Interceptor manual you have, do you have the explanation of the engine codes? If not, I've got it at home. The easy spot to look for the engine number is on the front block off casting where the automotive version would have had the circulation water pump. Your manual should also indicate which cu. in. blocks had the single carb. I think it was the 256 and then the 272 came both ways with different HP ratings. I'll take a look later.

Maybe Paul Bunyan and Daniel Boone had retired from the factory by the time they made your boat!! Up front where the keel transitioned into the stem and then up the stem is where they got real crude fastening the ply bottom.

Pete, I haven't seen any dumb dumb, but I'll be on the look out for it. This boat appears well made to me.

It's got a Y block which I assumed is a 135 hp 256 ci. Is it possible that it is a 272 or 292? It has one side draft carb. How can I tell what the engine is?

That's exactly what I was wondering, patch job on a bright finish vs complete reskining of that side.

If I remember correctly, the auction ends today. I'm interested to see if it makes reserve and if so, what it goes for.

Bruce,
Wow, your Atom must have been built in a different factory!! No offence, but my experience with other wood boats and the craftmanship in them I've got a different opinion. One thing however is I've had the oportunity to have a CC hull completely apart so I've been into one "deeper" than I believe you have. Lots of "dumb-dumb" which is a derogatory term used for fillers or putty. Screws driven through the ply competely missing frames and then left there to become a leak. Axes used on frames for engine or shift linkage clearance!!

That boat looks far too nice to scrap. I wish it were closer. I'd be interested in it.

After spending so much time in our Atom, I'm very impressed with the quality of workmanship that went into it. It needs sides, bottom and deck, as well as some trim boats due to rot and delamination, but the framing appears good. The fit and finish of the framing is excellent, far better than the framing on the fiberglass models.

John,
Billy's correct that there is rot and delamination involved. The rot usually starts when there is some delamination and then the water gets in there keeping the wood wet.

I'm surprised that area was missed when the bottom work was done. Maybe he gave up after doing the bottom. The hull sides being bright takes the woodwrker into a higher level of skill!! It's quite possible that the bad area might have just been a filler type patch and paint job. Billy sure can confirm that that method doesn't work. Ralphs and Walts decision to send the Dart to the CC factory for a "restoration" was a big mistake. I think the factory handed the guy who sweeps the floors a can of Marinetex, a can of paint and a brush! BTW, Marinetex is not a good product to use on wood. In fact, I question it's use on anything!!

Getting back to the repair on the Compact, the bad section of ply needs to be replaced with wood. The problem with this is where do you start and stop. The damage goes up into the bright area of the hull. A sectional patch will always be very noticeable even done by the very best woodworker. The original hull ply was scarfed making any seams as close to unnoticeable as possible. It's close to impossible to scarf joint in the middle of a piece of plywood. Then there's the other problem with patching whether it's done with butt blocking or scarfing. Any means of glueing (epoxy) will seal the edges of the patch preventing any stain from "taking" in the sealed area. The patch as well as the old ply must be pre finished to the point where any epoxy that come out of the joint can be wiped off before it cures. If the area was just below the waterline then of course the patch could be faired and the bottom repainted. Now, if there's one bad area, are there more? A hull inspection would be needed.

The proper way? Complete hull side replacement!

Terp, not near the "resident Wood Dr" here , he will reply also, but that don't look like damage. That appears to be "ROT", I know what I would do if my Dart had an open wound such as the Skier has.
I have a minor "delam" on the upper deck that I will pay someone else to repair and do "Correctly".
Appears they did a bottom job and assumed the rest was fine, or I am totaly wrong and a simple fix is all thats needed. The motor and running gear will bring top price, possibly being worth more in parts than running...........Boat dr

Pete, what do you make of the hull damage on this one? Based on what you can see, what would you do to repair that properly?

Steve, you haven't located that boat yet?

Did you see it is for sale on this site?     Bannana Boat

I curious as to what he thinks it's worth or what he is willing to sell it for.
I guess it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Good Luck!
