I'm sure the answer is here, but since the search isn't working her it is.

93 Excel with a Walters V Drive, manual and everything I can find on PN says 30 weight non detergent oil. I was changing all fluids this last weekend and when I got to the V Drive the oil was clean, but smelled like gear oil. I opened the bottle of new oil to check it, and it doesn't have that smell, and is thinner. then I found on the side of the V Drive there is a plate that says 30w, or 80w gear oil is acceptable. Is on preferable to the other? Should I try to flush out the gear oil to replace it with 30w, or should I continue to use 80w it because it is there already?

i see them both in there also, if i had to pick i would stick with the gear oil, it bonds to the gears for better lube and will rise unlike the 30w to the upper gears and u-joint section

Big difference between 30 and 90! You'd think that since Walters is so picky about there "special" bearings that they would be the same with their lubricant!!!!

I'd favor the 90 just as Eric mentioned it has the EP additives for the gear tooth faces.
