Has anyone had any experience with Zebra Muscles? Or have them on their lakes?
I was out cleaning the boat after it sat in the water during our days at Lake Delhi and noticed a hard scum on the bottom of the boat. I've dealt with scum on the boat before but this feels a little more gritty than the stuff our lake normally leaves behind. Hopefully some boat bottom cleaner will take care of it! |

We have plenty of zebra muscles, I doubt they have anything to do with hard scum. They have drastically changed my lake in just about a decade. They are basically covering anything hard that is in the water, most of my lake is rock bottom and every single square inch of rock was covered. The visibility of the lake vastly increased but that allows more light to reach the milfoil. Sharp buggers, we have had them long enough that some shore areas are starting to form sand from the shells of the dead ones. I noticed a few zebra muscles on some of the weeds at the sandbar at GL, I don't know if they are completely infested at this point but if not it probably won't be long.

wasn't technically the 'bottom' of freighters. it was the ballasts. But basically the same thing.

Eric
I'm sure that Kristoff wasn't personally responsible, as I'm sure that he was quite young when they arrived here! |

We had them bad in our lake but they released some type of fish that eats them and ive noticed far less the past few years. They used to be all over any weeds you pulled up and all over the pier poles and bottom on the pontoon.

We got em in our lake about 6 years ago. probably some wally boat brought them in. They have cleaned the lake but the little Basters cut the he# out of your feet it you step on them. I slipped on the seawall a couple days ago and got 3 gashes on my heels. Now it's shoe skis till they heal.

Has anybody had any issues with them getting into their cooling system, and if so what did you do to get rid of them? Is it common to get into cooling systems or is that a longshot?

I would say its a long shot unless you leave the boat in the water and dont use it regularly.

I went to a slalom competition, and all boats used were required to flush their fresh water cooling systems with bleach. The owner of the private ski lake, who is also the local Nautique dealer, claims that the larvae can survive in the cooling system. Almost all lakes that our area have the little bastards. I've always got cuts on my feet, even though I try to wear water shoes whenever possible.

Sliced the cr@p out of my heel yesterday. I stepped on a pointed rock at noon which caused a blood blister on my heel. 4 hours later, I sliced open the blood blister on a zebra mussle. ![]() I wish those water shoes didn't look so dorky. |

Hey Steve, if your worried about looks try the speedo slides that all the soccer players wear. They work pretty good in the water, not so dorky looking and they float! I wear them all the time and as long as your not running around in the water they generally stay on. Like any other "new" shoe, I sometimes get blisters on the top of my feet until either the slides or my feet get "broken in" not sure which it is...
