I got the tape idea from backfoot100. It helps me to keep all the pollen in the air from being injected into my sinuses, as well as the water up the nose.
The tape in the dispenser is skinnier (3/4" wide) than the bare rolls (1" wide). I have to double up with the dispenser where the roll is wide enough for just 1 piece. You can easily tear it by hand. I purposely leave my used tape in everyone's boat so if they want to try it they have a sample to bring to the drugstore. If you're lucky I'll forget the whole roll in the glovebox. |

haha, I still have a roll of yours in my boat from a couple of years ago. Was that a hint for me to get back doing deeps? |

Yes Alan, and it's for next time I'm on the boat and forgot to bring more along.
Johnny did some great shortline runs yesterday. I've been doing the flip turn all summer and just noticed the fin is mounted extremely crooked. That sort of explains the other day whey I planted outside the right hand wake and did a complete wake cross before kicking off the ski... I've been going longline all year since Eddie told me not to 3-point so wide in February, nailed my first one the year back home in May! My camera broke and most of my skiing this year has been sans spotter. |

I think the forwards deepwater is the worst start for water up the nose, head thrown back water column landing on your face, you can do a front tumble up to greatly reduce nose water intake, but by far the most effective is the little pink nose clip with neckband that swimmers use. Learning a backdeep may get you water up the nose but once you do it well you won't get too much water up the nose from backdeeps. William is a diehard taper but I'm wearing him down, he has used my noseclip more and more due to the hassle of the tape which is also less effective than the clip at keeping water out. I am a huge sufferer of allergies so the clip is worth its weight in gold and they run about 2.99 and last for a couple months before they mysteriously melt so watch where you leave it as it may turn to a pink pile of goo. some is still stuck to my boat trailer, its the strap that melts then you cut it off and use the clip til it falls off and sinks, then bust out the next new one, you can keep them on your handles as they fit over the stiffeners on a front toe or back toe handle perfectly. they are easiest to use when they have the neckstrap because you just leave it around your neck and its there when you need it. you can pop it off while skiing and not lose it.
IMO: tape looks no "cooler" than a clip and works about half as good with twice the hassle. I have snomobiled alot and and being warm trumps style everytime...same for breathing. Love the jump helmet cup...LOL I have to laugh at the people who still think its cool to go without tape or clip but somehow think wiping their nose after every start and during skiing is somehow cool?????????????LOL |

On this whole business of tape over the nose or nose plugs: I don't use them much. I have taken a few snoots full of water in my time as a barefooter. IMO, it comes with the territory. I generally don't take on water doing a deep start, front or back. Mostly I tend to breath out on the start anyway, a habit I gained slalom skiing where I would go under the water on the pullout. If I take good header/faceplant, that is generally where I will get water up my nose.
I do the sinus rinse twice a day, whether I foot or not, only because I get sinus infections, whether I foot or not. If ya like a nose plug or the tape, awesome. If you don't like them, don't use them. Do I suffer some ill affects not using a noseplug or tape? Yeah, probably. Do I care? No. I like water in my face, and lots of it. How else would I enjoy barefooting. Hell, I don't even mind I good faceplant here and there. Let's me know I am alive and footin' and not camped out in front of the TV! |

I have enjoyed the discussionaround footing for a few pages now. I am a rookie footer but have been out with a lot of guys who are accomplished footers (up to back deeps). There is a wide range of opinion and experiences on nose issues (to plug or not to plug) here too. Is it possible that this just varies from person to person (i.e. it really bothers one footer's nose and not another).

Anybody who barefoots WILL get water up the nose, it comes with the territory. most resist plugging due to vanity issues. but I have to ask for those who don't plug...how attractive is a giant booger hanging off your face when you get back in the boat? how attractive is wiping your nose everytime you get up? watch a few barefoot videos and the non pluggers/tapers are always wiping their noses after they get up and during runs. very attractive

Its kind of wierd.... The water up the nose never bothered my until I was 23. Then it hit. I think I'm going to hit the drugstore tonight before I ski for some hollywood tape. |

Didn't bother me until I was 24. It is "backfoot100" tape, I'm just a spokesman. |

Agreed. I have never got water doing back deeps. I can breathe far easier than going forwards. I do a long slow breath out my nose going forwards and it takes care of most it. If I am in a particularly nasty lake, I would get a sinus headache and possibly infection. Regarding the cup discussion. I wear one, but for the just in case factor. I used to never wear one forwards or back. Then I heard a story about a guy who bounced wrong after a little hop. It also lends for some in-boat humor: Hey, hold this for a second. |

EXACTLY!
Also always use a marker to write XXXL on your cup(not your name or initials) then when searching the boat through 3 guys gear you can say Anybody seen my cup? and when they say which one is it? say It's the triple extra large one....or like Hollywood said It looks like a jump helmet....LOL |

Picking up a Sharpie on the way home.
I always say I would borrow mine out but there would probably be too much play in there for them. Andy, nice riding in that vid. The side slide to back is kick ass. Man, I need to get a barefooting boat again. My SAN is not it.... |

Wearing the cup is a number one priority for me. It's a just in case factor for me too. Just gotta protect 'em! As far as the nose, I've never tried the tape method. I used to wear the nose plugs but they look so rediculous that I just couldn't do it anymore!

BK: Diablo Shores is a nice set up. I was blessed to ski there once last year. Willie is a fun guy to be around too. He sure mixes it up on you!
Well Andy, Willie and I went out today even though it was blowing quite a bit. I finally hit my first long line back deep starts. Squirrelly and wild due the wake and having no freaking idea where I was behind the boat. Surprised I survived going down and banking off the wake! Long Line Back Deep Starts Now I have my winter project: getting a few miles of water under my feet behind the boat! |

Here is a man that is a real inspiration to the sport of barefooting. I hope to still be able to ski/foot when I am 76 years old!
