Hey guys,
The trailer that came with my 82, I think is a 1995 Super Sport (or air) Trailer and it has 6 lug wheels on it. I have no clue the conditions of the bearings but it ran pretty smooth all summer. There is plenty of grease inside the hub. The dust cap has a 1" hole in the middle and the PO had duck tape covering it. I used it all summer like that so water got right in but looking in the hub I don't see any discolored grease. I want to put some bearing buddies I just order on but should I remove the bearings first and inspect them? I have never done that before. There are drum brakes that don't work so it isn't as simple as popping a cotter pin and twisting off a nut to get to the two bearings is it? Here is a pic of my wheel without the dust cap. I also wiped some of the grease away to try to see inside: Should I break them down and repack and then put the bearing buddies on? |

Yes....you'll want to inspect the bearings and races, clean everything up and then repack before you put the bearing buddies on. If you just put them on, you'll be pumping new grease in with the old (and most likely dirty) grease that is in the hub. It will also give some good peace of mind to know the condition of things......it is a lot easier to fix things when you have the time and tools rather than than on the side of the road when you'd rather be on the water. |

Aka - The Thru-spindle system you have is better than a bearing buddy, so I would stay with what you have. You can get replacement rubber center plugs from Champion trailer supply, very cheap. You might want to replace the seals while you have it apart, as that would be cheap insurance.

Is that why it has the grease fitting on the end? Is it already sealed? The problem is the dust cap has a hole in the end about the size of a quarter and the grease was getting all over everything so I had to duct tape the end caps so the grease would stay in.
I figured with the bearing buddies it would at least keep the grease in and the water out. Usually there is a cotter pin in the castle nut but I don't see one in mine. Do I just hit it was a wrench and it will come off? What is stopping it from spinning off when I am moving? There are still two bearings? One in the front and one in the back? Thanks! |

There should be a thin sheet metal looking washer with a tab on it bent into one of the castle nut slots, look for that and then push it back then you can loosen the nut. The PO probably wanted to grease the back bearing so he cut an access hole in the dust cap, total DA move.

The hole in the cap would probably have a rubber insert on it...this is what chris mentioned. With this setup you can pop off the rubber insert and have access to the grease fitting without taking off the cap. This system will keep the water out if the rubber inserts are in good condition. On our 88 trailer we had one go bad and had to repack both (inner and outer)bearings. I would guess there is supposed to be a cotter pin. Take the castle nut off, clean the spindle and see if there is a hole for one. |
